How to Sell on TikTok Shop UK: A Guide for Shopify Brands

SHARE

TikTok Shop lets people buy a product without leaving TikTok, so the video, the creator and the checkout all sit in one place. For a Shopify brand it works as another sales channel: Shopify stays the home of your products, stock and fulfilment, while TikTok Shop adds discovery through shoppable videos, LIVE selling and creator affiliates.

It is not a button you switch on and forget. TikTok Shop has its own product rules, fees, payout schedule, fulfilment scores and creator programme, and the brands that do well are rarely the ones with the biggest following. They have a product people want to watch, enough margin to pay a platform fee and a creator commission, and the stock and fulfilment to cope when a video takes off.

This guide covers how to sell on TikTok Shop in the UK from a Shopify store, from signing up to getting paid, including a result from one of our own clients. TikTok changes its fees and seller rules often, so everything here was checked against TikTok and Shopify on 1 October 2026; check Seller Centre again before you launch.

Key Takeaways

  • UK sellers can register as a sole trader or individual seller, a privately owned, publicly listed or state owned business, or a charity, so you do not need a limited company to start.
  • Shopify's TikTok sales channel syncs your catalogue, inventory, fulfilment and orders, but refunds, returns and cancellations still have to be handled in TikTok Seller Centre.
  • TikTok Shop UK charges a 9% commission on each completed order, VAT included, with lower rates in some categories. Creator commission comes on top for affiliate sales.
  • New sellers are paid 31 days after delivery. That drops to 8 days once out of probation, and to 3 or 1 days only for shops with strong performance and sales, so plan the cash flow before you launch.
  • Since July 2025, GMV Max has been the only campaign type for TikTok Shop ads, and its reporting includes organic and affiliate orders as well as paid ones.
  • One of our coffee clients reached £2,375 in TikTok Shop sales in its first six weeks with four creators. It lost money on first orders, but the lifetime value of the new customers made it profitable.

What Is TikTok Shop, and Who Does It Suit?

TikTok Shop is TikTok's own marketplace. Shopify lists three ways to sell through it: LIVE shopping, shoppable videos in the feed and a product showcase on your TikTok profile. Unlike a TikTok advert that sends people to your Shopify checkout, the sale happens inside TikTok, with TikTok running checkout and payment, while Shopify can still hold the catalogue, inventory and fulfilment.

TikTok Shop suits products that are easy to demonstrate, look good on camera and can be understood in a few seconds. Beauty, fashion, food and drink, household products, supplements and gifts all fit, subject to TikTok's category rules. The product also needs enough margin to absorb a platform fee and a creator commission, and enough stock to survive a sudden spike in orders.

It is harder to justify when margins are already thin, fulfilment is unreliable, the product needs a long technical sale, or nobody on the team has time to manage content, creators and customer service. TikTok Shop is not passive marketplace distribution: content creates the discovery, creators spread it, and operations protect the shop once the orders arrive.

What Do You Need to Sell on TikTok Shop in the UK?

TikTok lets UK sellers register under five seller types: sole trader or individual seller, privately owned business, publicly listed business, state owned business or charity. Choose carefully, because the type sets which documents you need and TikTok says it cannot easily be changed later. Every seller needs a TikTok account, a UK phone number or email and access to the verification code, and each phone number or email can only be used to register once.

Sole traders and individual sellers verify with a UK government issued passport or driving licence, a scan of the document and a short verification video. Companies and other organisations add the legal company name, registration number and registration date, plus a primary representative who verifies their own identity and chooses a role of owner, director or technical service provider. Where TikTok asks, corporate sellers must also show beneficial ownership, including directors and anyone holding 25% or more of the shares or control.

If you connect through Shopify, Shopify requires a verifiable address in your Locations settings, a store based in a supported country such as the UK, an online store, a TikTok for Business account and a return policy page on your store. You can create the TikTok Shop and TikTok for Business accounts during onboarding if you do not have them yet.

Check your category before anything else. TikTok sorts products into permitted, restricted, invite only and prohibited categories: restricted products can need documents, certificates and extra product details, invite only categories need TikTok's approval first, and prohibited products cannot be listed or promoted at all.

TikTok also scores fulfilment. Its UK guidance treats an on time delivery rate of 90% or above as healthy, expects Ship by TikTok orders to be dispatched within two business days, and can respond to poor performance with reduced visibility, order limits, frozen funds or late delivery fees. Going viral is no use if you cannot ship what you sell, so treat stock and fulfilment as part of the marketing plan.

How Do You Connect TikTok Shop to Shopify?

For a Shopify brand, the native route is Shopify's TikTok sales channel, which syncs your catalogue, inventory, fulfilment and orders between the two platforms. Once your documents are ready, setup takes a few minutes:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings, then Sales channels, and click Shopify App Store.
  2. Search for TikTok and click Add channel.
  3. On the Set up TikTok Shop page, click Connect, then log in with your TikTok for Business account or register as a merchant.
  4. Review the TikTok Shop merchant terms and click Connect.
  5. Click Verify under shop information, upload the documents for your seller type, then click Finish setup.

If products will not sync and you see a location address error, check Settings, then Locations: Shopify says the location name must be 35 characters or fewer and the address must match how it appears on Google Maps. TikTok, not Shopify, runs seller verification and supports TikTok Shop, so account questions go to TikTok Shop support.

Once connected, products can sync automatically, and you choose which ones TikTok sees through each product's sales channel availability. Do not send the whole catalogue on day one. Start with products that have healthy margin and stock, simple variants and strong visual content, because a small clean catalogue is far easier to manage than 5,000 synced products nobody has checked.

Connecting the two does not make Seller Centre redundant. Shopify fulfils the orders, but TikTok Seller Centre is where you handle product approval, affiliates, finance, Shop health, ads, and every refund, return and cancellation.

How Do You List Products and Keep Stock in Sync?

Product data matters twice on TikTok Shop: it decides whether TikTok approves the listing, then whether people buy. TikTok's listing guidance asks for titles that are accurate, concise and descriptive, covering product type, material, key features, quantity and size, with no promotional claims such as 50% OFF. A pattern of brand, product, key attribute and size works far better than shouting at the shopper.

Images must show exactly what is for sale: colour images of at least 800 by 800 pixels, up to nine square images, a main image that shows the product clearly, and no unnecessary text, watermarks or promotional overlays. Use the extra images for other angles, features and what comes in the box. Above all, make the title, description, images, variants and price describe the same item, because TikTok issues violations when they do not match.

When a TikTok order is placed, Shopify says TikTok checks your Shopify inventory: if stock is available the order is created in Shopify, and if it is not, no order is created. That makes stock accuracy critical, because TikTok counts seller cancellations caused by an out of stock item against your seller fault cancellation rate. The TikTok channel in Shopify also shows each product's status and the reasons TikTok gives for rejecting one, so fix the source data in Shopify rather than patching the same problem by hand.

What Does It Cost to Sell on TikTok Shop?

TikTok Shop UK charges a commission of 9% on each completed order, and TikTok says the rate already includes VAT. It is calculated on net sales plus any customer paid shipping and platform discount, less refunds, and deducted from your settlement. TikTok's own example is a £100 pair of shoes sold with £10 of seller discount, £10 of platform discount and £5 of shipping, which carries a commission of £8.55, and if a whole order is refunded, the commission is refunded too.

Some sellers pay less. TikTok publishes lower rates for some categories, such as 5% on the computer in its own example, and can offer reductions to eligible new sellers or through seller missions, so check the rate shown in your own Seller Centre. TikTok's seller terms say payments are normally processed through Stripe, and its finance guidance says it does not charge a separate fee to pay you out, although your bank may.

Creator commission comes on top for affiliate sales. You set the rate, and TikTok deducts the creator's share from your payout once the order settles. Here is how a £60 sale through a creator might break down, assuming the 15% creator rate is applied to the price before VAT; check how your own Seller Centre calculates the commission base.

Where a £60 creator sale goes Customer pays £60.00 VAT (20%) £10.00 TikTok fee (9%) £5.40 Creator (15%) £7.50 Left over £37.10 Before product cost, packaging, delivery, returns and ads
Figure 2: A £60 creator sale with 20% VAT, the 9% TikTok commission and an illustrative 15% creator commission leaves £37.10 before your other costs.

That £37.10 is not profit. It still has to cover the product, packaging, delivery, returns and any advertising, which is why margin, not reach, decides whether TikTok Shop works for a product.

How Long Do TikTok Shop Payouts Take?

TikTok releases funds a set number of days after delivery, not after the order, and new sellers wait longest. Its settlement policy reviews every seller at the start of each month:

TierPaid after deliveryWho gets it
Introductory31 daysNew sellers and sellers in Beginner probation
Standard8 daysThe default once out of probation
Accelerated3 daysShop Performance Score from 3.0 to under 3.5, plus a sales threshold
Express1 dayShop Performance Score of 3.5 or more, plus a higher sales threshold
Deferred31 daysShops under security or fraud checks

Those first 31 days hurt cash flow. A product can sell today, need restocking today and owe a creator commission today, while the money from that order arrives weeks later, so build the gap into your launch budget.

How Do Creator Affiliates and LIVE Selling Work?

TikTok Shop Affiliate is what makes TikTok Shop different from a normal marketplace: creators promote your products and earn a commission when their content sells. With Open Collaboration you make chosen products available to a wide pool of creators at a commission you set, and with Target Collaboration you invite specific creators. Both can include free samples, and most brands run the two side by side.

Work the commission out from your margin rather than copying competitors. A generous rate makes a product more attractive to creators, but an attractive commission on a product with no margin left is not a strategy. Treat samples as marketing spend: track how many you send, who posts, what content they make, the sales and commission it produces and which creators sell again. TikTok uses the same logic in its sample tools, measuring Sample ROI as sales from sample content divided by the cost of the samples.

Creators need a product that is easy to demonstrate, the customer problem it solves, accurate claims, a fair commission, samples, reliable stock and fast answers. They do not need a 14 page script. TikTok requires product claims to be accurate and supportable, so give creators the facts and the angle, then let them make content that sounds like them.

This is what a small creator programme can do. One of our coffee clients reached £2,375 in TikTok Shop sales in its first six weeks, with four creators posting affiliate videos. On first orders alone the campaign returned less than it cost, but it brought in a strong number of first time customers, and their lifetime value made the campaign profitable.

LIVE selling lets customers buy while they watch, which suits products that need demonstrating, explaining or bundling. It also needs a host, a run of show, stock, moderation, offers and someone to answer questions, so do not start LIVE until you can staff it properly.

Which Ads Help TikTok Shop Sales?

Since July 2025, TikTok says GMV Max has been the default and only campaign type for TikTok Shop ads, with Product GMV Max for products and LIVE GMV Max for livestreams. Product GMV Max optimises for the shop's total return across paid and organic traffic, uses your available creative, and runs across the feed, search, the Shop tab and TikTok's ad network.

Read its reporting carefully. TikTok attributes every order for the products you advertise to the campaign, including organic and affiliate orders, and uses a one day attribution window, so a GMV Max figure is not comparable with a last click report from Meta or Google. In the UK, organic content included in a GMV Max campaign gets a commercial content label automatically.

The useful loop is creator first. Recruit creators, see which organic videos sell, get authorisation to use them as ads, then put spend behind the proven ones, which GMV Max can do directly with authorised affiliate posts. Creator content pays off beyond TikTok too: creator videos cut Halo Coffee's cost per sale on Meta by 27% between 2018 and 2021.

What Mistakes Should You Avoid?

TikTok Shop scales mistakes as quickly as it scales sales. These are the ones we watch for first:

  • Stock that is not properly synced. A creator video takes off, Shopify sells out, TikTok still shows stock, and the cancellations count against your shop.
  • Sending the whole catalogue at once. Start with a handful of products with good margin, clean data, reliable stock and creator potential, then expand.
  • Slow dispatch. If the warehouse cannot cope with a spike, fix that before recruiting affiliates, because late deliveries can cost you visibility, order limits and funds.
  • Creator briefs that read like adverts. Give the facts, the claims rules, what makes the product different and the commercial terms, then let creators sound like themselves.
  • Samples nobody measures. Samples cost product, packaging, postage and time, so judge the programme on content and sales, not parcels sent.
  • Chasing views instead of sales. A video with 500,000 views and £200 of sales is worth less than one with 20,000 views and £5,000, so judge content on orders, conversion, commission and contribution.
  • Ignoring cash flow. On a 31 day settlement period, growth can consume cash for stock, samples, commission and ads before the payouts arrive.

Why Matters Perspective

We run TikTok Shop as a second shop window for a Shopify store, not as a second business. Shopify stays the source for products, inventory, orders and fulfilment, and TikTok Shop gets its own weekly rhythm: product approval, stock, Shop health, affiliates, samples, creator output, sales, ads and contribution after fees.

Our coffee client shows why the measure matters. A first order view said the campaign lost money; a customer view said it found new buyers who kept ordering, which is why we look at customer lifetime value as well as return on ad spend before calling a channel a failure. We also know that adding 1,000 creators to an affiliate programme is not the same as having 1,000 creators producing useful content, so we track who requested a sample, who posted, who sold and whose content deserves paid spend.

Why Matters manages TikTok Shop and creator programmes for Shopify brands as a TikTok partner, alongside the store, paid social and email. When results disappoint, the cause is often stock, product data, margin, fulfilment, an unattractive commission or simply the wrong product, rather than a need to post more. See our social media marketing agency page if you want help running it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TikTok Shop available in the UK?

Yes. UK sellers can register in TikTok Shop Seller Centre as a sole trader or individual seller, a privately owned, publicly listed or state owned business, or a charity, and Shopify's TikTok sales channel supports stores based in the UK.

How much does it cost to sell on TikTok Shop?

TikTok Shop UK charges a 9% commission on each completed order, VAT included, with lower rates in some categories. Affiliate sales also carry the creator commission you set, and TikTok says it does not charge a separate fee to pay out your earnings.

Can I connect TikTok Shop to Shopify?

Yes. Shopify's TikTok sales channel syncs your catalogue, inventory, fulfilment and orders, so TikTok Shop orders appear in Shopify for fulfilment. Refunds, returns and cancellations still have to be completed in TikTok Seller Centre.

Do I need a business to sell on TikTok Shop?

No. You can register as a sole trader or individual seller with a UK passport or driving licence and a short verification video. Companies, state owned businesses and charities register with their company details and a verified representative.

How do TikTok Shop affiliates get paid?

You set the commission rate for the products creators promote. When an affiliate order settles, TikTok deducts the creator's commission from your payout and pays it to the creator.

How long do TikTok Shop payouts take?

New sellers are paid 31 days after delivery. Once out of probation, sellers move to 8 days, and shops with strong performance scores and sales can qualify for 3 days or 1 day.

Is TikTok Shop worth it for small brands?

It can be, if the product is easy to demonstrate, has the margin to cover a 9% commission and a creator commission, and you can fulfil orders reliably. One of our coffee clients made £2,375 in its first six weeks with four creators, and the lifetime value of its new customers made it profitable.

Final Thoughts

If you already run a Shopify store, connecting TikTok Shop is the easy part. The hard part is the system around it, so work in this order: verify the seller, check your category, connect Shopify, choose a few commercially sensible products, check titles, images, variants and stock sync, confirm fulfilment capacity, understand the 9% commission and your settlement tier, launch Open or Target collaborations, track creator sales rather than reach, and only then test GMV Max.

Do not start with 1,000 products and 500 free samples. Get the operation working, then scale what sells.
