The best Shopify subscription app depends on how central subscriptions are to your business. Shopify Subscriptions and Seal are simple, low cost ways to start. Appstle and Loop add more flexibility as you grow. Recharge offers the deepest retention tools for brands where subscriptions drive the business, and since April 2026 it also owns Skio.
Subscriptions are worth getting right. Recharge's 2026 Subscription Trend Report, covering more than 20,000 brands, found that subscribers placed nearly three times as many orders as one time shoppers. We are a Recharge partner, so Recharge links in this guide are partner links; prices below come from each app's own pricing page or App Store listing, checked in September 2026. If you are still deciding whether to offer subscriptions at all, start with our guide to adding subscriptions to Shopify.
For a first, simple subscription offer, use Shopify Subscriptions, which is free, or Seal, which is free for up to 50 subscriptions. For a growing brand that wants more flexibility at a modest cost, Appstle charges no transaction fees and Loop starts free. For brands where subscriptions are central and churn is the priority, Recharge is the most complete option, from $99 a month plus transaction fees on Starter. Compare total monthly cost, not just the headline plan price, because transaction fees grow with your revenue.
All prices are in US dollars, as each app publishes them, and exclude payment processing fees.
| App | Free or entry plan | Paid plans | Transaction fees | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Subscriptions | Free | None | None | No bundles; works with a limited set of payment gateways |
| Recharge | $25 plan for up to 50 lifetime subscription customers (stores new to Recharge since 9 February 2026) | Starter $99; Plus $499 on a 12 month term | Starter 1.49% plus 19 cents; Plus 1.34% plus 19 cents; none on the $25 plan | 60 day trial on Starter; bundles, rewards and referrals on Plus only |
| Loop | Free for up to 50 active subscriptions | Starter $99; Pro $399; Enterprise custom | Starter 1%; Pro 0.75% | Free migration on paid plans; 14 day trial |
| Appstle | Free up to $500 a month of subscription revenue | $10 up to $5,000; $30 up to $15,000; $100 up to $100,000 a month | None on any plan | Bundles from the $30 plan |
| Seal | Free for up to 50 subscriptions | $5.95 for 100 subscriptions, $9.95 for 250, $24.95 for 500, with larger plans | None on the free plan | 30 day trial |
Headline prices can mislead, because some apps charge a percentage of subscription revenue and Recharge adds a fee per transaction. Take a store with 500 subscribers on monthly deliveries, each paying $40, or $20,000 a month:
| App and plan | Monthly cost in the example | How it is made up |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Subscriptions | $0 | Free app |
| Seal | $24.95 | Plan for up to 500 subscriptions |
| Appstle | $100 | Plan for up to $100,000 a month of subscription revenue |
| Loop Starter | $299 | $99 plus 1% of $20,000 |
| Recharge Starter | $492 | $99 plus 1.49% of $20,000 plus 19 cents on 500 orders |
| Loop Pro | $549 | $399 plus 0.75% of $20,000 |
| Recharge Plus | $862 | $499 plus 1.34% of $20,000 plus 19 cents on 500 orders |
These are illustrations rather than quotes, and the apps are not like for like: the cheaper options do less. The point is to model your own numbers before choosing, and to set any extra cost against what the app could save in cancellations. Our guide to Recharge vs Shopify Subscriptions shows how to work out what a paid app must achieve to pay for itself.
Customer self service. Subscribers expect to pause, skip, reschedule, change products or frequency and update payment details without contacting you. Recurly's 2026 State of Subscriptions report, covering 76 million subscribers across 2,200 merchants, found that where merchants offered a pause before cancellation, pause usage rose by 337%, and three in four paused subscribers returned. The same report found that 52% of consumers had cancelled at least one subscription in the past year.
Email integration. Lifecycle flows do much of the retention work. Klaviyo's benchmarks, drawn from more than 183,000 brands, show flows generating about 41% of email revenue from 5.3% of sends, with 18 times the revenue per recipient of campaigns. Check which subscription events, such as upcoming charges, failed payments and cancellations, your app sends to Klaviyo before you choose. Our guide to the Klaviyo flows every Shopify subscription brand should build covers what to build.
Analytics. You need to see churn, cancellation reasons and lifetime value by product and channel. Our guide to Shopify subscription metrics explains what to track.
Room to grow. Think about bundles, prepaid plans, international selling and how much control your team needs over the customer portal, because moving apps later takes planning and care.
Shopify Subscriptions is Shopify's own free app. According to the Shopify Help Center, it creates auto billed subscriptions that renew weekly, monthly or yearly, supports several discount types, and lets customers skip, pause and cancel from their account. It suits a simple first offer.
Check its limits before you commit. It does not support bundles, works with a limited set of payment gateways, needs a theme that supports sections and blocks, applies gift cards and Scripts to the first payment only, and does not support draft orders. Uninstalling it deletes its plans, contracts and discounts, so export everything before any change.
Recharge is built around retention. Its Starter plan, at $99 a month plus 1.49% and 19 cents per transaction with a 60 day free trial, includes the customer portal, cancellation prevention, failed payment recovery, upsells and win back tools. Plus, at $499 a month plus 1.34% and 19 cents on a 12 month term, adds bundles, rewards, referrals, a JavaScript SDK and concierge SMS. Stores new to Recharge since 9 February 2026 can start on a $25 plan with no transaction fees for up to 50 lifetime subscription customers.
Recharge's Cancellation Prevention asks customers why they are leaving and shows an offer tailored to that reason, then reports each attempt as saved or abandoned so you can test different offers. Recharge also acquired Skio on 30 April 2026, and both platforms continue to operate with a combined roadmap. The announcement did not disclose terms, but Skio's founder said the deal was worth $105 million in cash.
Most of our clients use Recharge because of the high level of customisation it offers to help them reduce churn. They see it as a good investment, especially when it can quickly pay back its monthly cost. The trade off is cost: transaction fees rise with revenue, so model them carefully if your margins are tight.
Loop is free for up to 50 active subscriptions. Its Starter plan costs $99 a month plus 1% of transactions, and Pro costs $399 a month plus 0.75%, with no fee per order on either; Enterprise pricing is custom. Paid plans are billed monthly with a 14 day free trial, and Loop includes migration on paid plans at no extra cost. It is a strong option for growing brands that want a modern subscriber experience without a long commitment.
Appstle prices by subscription revenue rather than by transaction: free up to $500 a month, then $10 up to $5,000, $30 up to $15,000 and $100 up to $100,000, with no transaction fees on any plan. Bundles start on the $30 plan. That makes Appstle one of the most cost predictable options for small and mid sized brands, although more advanced setups can take longer to configure.
Seal is free for up to 50 subscriptions with no transaction fees, then $5.95 a month for 100 subscriptions, $9.95 for 250 and $24.95 for 500, with larger plans available and a 30 day trial. It is a practical, low cost way to test subscriptions, though growing brands may eventually want deeper analytics and retention tools.
Whatever you choose, think three years ahead. Moving apps is manageable, but it takes planning, testing and clear communication with subscribers.
A cosmetics brand came to us after launching subscriptions on Shopify Subscriptions. As its subscriber base grew, customers wanted more control over their orders and the business needed better reporting and lifecycle marketing. We moved it to Recharge, redesigned the subscriber journey, improved the customer portal and built Klaviyo lifecycle flows.
The results: subscription churn fell by 65%, customer lifetime value rose by 72% and subscription lifetime value rose by 49%. The software made those gains possible, but the biggest improvements came from the better customer experience built on top of it.
Merchants commonly move from Shopify Subscriptions or Seal to Recharge, Loop or Appstle as their programme grows. A good migration audits your plans and discounts, moves subscription contracts and payment details safely, rebuilds the portal and email flows, tests renewals and failed payments, and tells subscribers what is changing. If you are leaving Shopify Subscriptions, only uninstall it once every contract is confirmed in the new app. Our Shopify subscriptions service covers how we manage these moves.
Many merchants compare subscription apps almost entirely on price. In our experience, the software cost is usually small next to the revenue lost to avoidable cancellations, which is why we start with the subscriber experience rather than the feature list. Most of our clients use Recharge because of the high level of customisation it offers to help them reduce churn. They see it as a good investment, especially when it can quickly pay back its monthly cost.
That does not make Recharge right for everyone. For a first offer, Shopify Subscriptions or Seal is the sensible start, and Appstle and Loop both deserve a serious look for growing brands. We recommend whichever app gives your subscribers the most control and your team the clearest view of churn at a cost your margins can carry.
We are a Shopify Select partner with Verified Skills across development and marketing, and a Klaviyo and Recharge partner. If a simpler app is enough for you, we will say so.
What is the best Shopify subscription app?
It depends on your stage. Shopify Subscriptions and Seal suit a simple first offer, Appstle and Loop suit growing brands, and Recharge suits brands where subscriptions are central and reducing churn is the priority.
Is Shopify Subscriptions free?
Yes. Shopify Subscriptions is a free app, but it does not support bundles, works with a limited set of payment gateways and needs a theme that supports sections and blocks.
How much does Recharge cost?
Recharge Starter costs $99 a month plus 1.49% and 19 cents per transaction, with a 60 day free trial, and Plus costs $499 a month plus 1.34% and 19 cents on a 12 month term. Stores new to Recharge since 9 February 2026 can start on a $25 plan for up to 50 lifetime subscription customers.
Is Recharge worth the investment?
Most of our clients use Recharge because of the high level of customisation it offers to help them reduce churn. They see it as a good investment, especially when it can quickly pay back its monthly cost. In a store with 500 subscribers paying $40 a month, Starter costs about $492 a month, so it needs to save only a small number of cancellations to pay for itself.
Which subscription app has no transaction fees?
Shopify Subscriptions and Appstle charge no transaction fees on any plan. Seal charges none on its free plan, and Recharge charges none on its $25 plan for new stores.
What happened to Skio?
Recharge acquired Skio on 30 April 2026. Recharge says both platforms continue to operate with a combined roadmap, and Skio's founder said the deal was worth $105 million in cash.
Can I move from one subscription app to another?
Yes. Plan the move carefully, transfer contracts and payment details safely, rebuild your portal and email flows, test renewals and failed payments, and tell subscribers what is changing. Loop includes migration on its paid plans.
Will changing subscription app reduce churn?
Not on its own. A better app gives you the tools, such as easier pausing, cancellation offers and failed payment recovery, but churn falls when you use them well alongside good lifecycle marketing.
Choose a subscription app for the experience it lets you give subscribers and the total cost it adds at your revenue, not the length of its feature list. Start simple if you are testing demand, and move to a more capable platform when subscriptions become central to your growth.
