Facebook Shop for Shopify: Setup, Requirements and What Changed

Key Takeaways

  • A Facebook Shop is a free storefront on your Facebook Page, built from the same product catalogue as Instagram Shopping and your Meta ads.
  • Customers can no longer check out inside Facebook: Shopify says they are redirected to your online store to complete the purchase.
  • Meta stopped acting as marketplace tax facilitator for new orders from 26 August 2025, so tax on these orders is handled by your store as normal.
  • You need a Facebook Page owned by your business portfolio, full control of both, a store that is not in private mode, and a business in a supported country.
  • Products go through Meta's review and must follow its Commerce Policy; removing a product from the channel removes it from shops and ads at once.
  • All of our clients have Facebook or Instagram Shops connected, and across our clients they bring more sales than TikTok Shop; beauty and cosmetics brands usually do well.
  • The same catalogue also powers catalogue ads and retargeting, so keeping it clean pays off twice.

Quick Answer

To set up a Facebook Shop from Shopify, add the Facebook and Instagram by Meta sales channel, connect your Facebook account, business portfolio and Page, and share your products to a Meta catalogue. After Meta reviews the products, they appear in a shop on your Facebook Page. Checkout no longer happens on Facebook: shoppers are sent to your Shopify store to pay, which keeps the customer data and the sale in your own store. The same catalogue powers Instagram Shopping and your Meta ads.

Table of Contents

Facebook Shops have changed a great deal since they launched, and much of the advice online still describes checkout inside Facebook. This guide explains how a Facebook Shop works for a Shopify store today, what you need to set one up, and where it earns its keep.

What Is a Facebook Shop?

A Facebook Shop is a storefront on your business's Facebook Page. It shows your products, prices and collections so people can browse without leaving Facebook. When someone wants to buy, they tap through to your own store to complete the purchase.

For Shopify stores the shop is created through the Facebook and Instagram by Meta sales channel. Shopify's guide to the channel says it contains a single product catalogue for shops on Facebook and Instagram and for ads, so setting up the shop also prepares your products for Instagram and for advertising.

In words: your Shopify products sync to one Meta catalogue, which is used by your Facebook Shop, Instagram Shopping and your Meta ads, and every purchase is completed on your own store.

What Changed With Checkout

For a while some shops let customers pay inside Facebook and Instagram. That is no longer how it works. Shopify's guide says customers are redirected to your online store to complete purchases, and that Meta is no longer a marketplace tax facilitator for new orders created as of 26 August 2025, so you are responsible for collecting tax on these orders and should check your tax settings.

For most Shopify stores this is good news. Every order comes through your own checkout, with your payment options, your upsells and your email sign up, and the customer becomes your customer rather than a Facebook order to reconcile.

Is a Facebook Shop Worth Setting Up?

Usually yes. It costs nothing, takes little time once the channel is connected, and it does sell. All of our clients have Facebook or Instagram Shops connected, and across our clients they bring more sales than TikTok Shop. Beauty and cosmetics brands usually do well on Facebook Shop. The catalogue behind the shop adds more value again:

  • A shop tab on your Page for people who find you on Facebook and want to browse.
  • Product tagging in posts and, with Instagram set up, in Instagram content.
  • Catalogue ads, which show each person the products they viewed or similar ones.
  • One place to manage products for Facebook, Instagram and ads, synced from Shopify.

Facebook Shop Requirements

Shopify lists the requirements for the channel. The main ones:

RequirementWhat Shopify says
Online storeYou need a Shopify online store, not in private mode, with a valid sender email
LocationYour business must be in one of Meta's supported countries for Shops
Facebook PageYour business needs its own published Page, connected to your business portfolio
ControlYour personal Facebook account needs full control of the business portfolio and the Page
ProductsProducts must be available to buy directly from your verified domain and follow Meta's Commerce Policy
InstagramFor Instagram selling, a professional account linked to your Page
Ad accountOnly needed if you run ads
FeedbackKeep a good feedback score for your business portfolio

How to Set Up a Facebook Shop From Shopify

  1. Check ownership. Make sure your business portfolio owns the Facebook Page and that you have full control of both. If an agency or freelancer owns them, ask for ownership to be transferred first.
  2. Add the sales channel. In Shopify admin go to Settings, Sales channels, then the Shopify App Store, search for Facebook and add Facebook and Instagram by Meta.
  3. Connect your accounts. Sign in to Facebook, connect the business portfolio, Page and, if you advertise, ad account and Pixel, then accept the terms.
  4. Check your tax settings, because orders from Facebook are now taxed through your store.
  5. Choose which products to share and wait for Meta's review.
  6. Arrange your shop. Shopify says its collections only sync to Facebook for stores in the United States, so UK stores group products into collections in Meta's Commerce Manager instead.

Each staff member who manages the channel connects with their own Facebook account, which also needs full control of the business portfolio and Page.

Getting the Catalogue Right

The catalogue is shared across your shop and ads, so its quality affects everything. Shopify's publishing guide says a product made available applies to every Facebook and Instagram feature at once, and lists what makes a product eligible: it must require shipping (so digital products do not qualify), have a return policy and a Google product category, meet Meta's image, title and description specifications, follow Meta's Commerce Policy, and not be free.

  • Clear titles that say what the product is, not just a range name.
  • Strong images on a clean background, plus lifestyle images where possible; our guide to product photography covers what to shoot.
  • Accurate stock and prices, kept in sync by the channel.
  • Products that follow Meta's Commerce Policy, which restricts some categories; rejected items will not show.
  • Variants set up properly so colours and sizes appear as one product with options.

Using Your Shop and Catalogue With Ads

Once the catalogue is in place, Meta can show each person the products they looked at, or similar ones, in catalogue ads. These retargeting ads are often among the most efficient Meta campaigns for a Shopify store, and they depend on the Pixel and Conversions API recording what people view and buy. Our guide to the Meta Pixel and Conversions API on Shopify explains the setup.

Creative still matters alongside the catalogue. When Halo Coffee added creator videos to its Meta ads, its cost per sale fell by 27% between 2018 and 2021. A mix of catalogue ads for people who have browsed and creator videos for new audiences usually works better than either alone.

Why Matters Perspective

We are a Meta partner, and we set up the Facebook and Instagram channel for most of the Shopify stores we build. As the figures above show, the shops earn their place for our clients. The shop is only part of the picture, though: a clean catalogue, reliable tracking and good creative are what make Meta ads profitable. The move to checkout on your own store has made all of this simpler, because every sale now lands in Shopify.

Ad accounts and pages we set up always belong to the client. We are a Shopify Select partner with Verified Skills across development and marketing, our pricing is published, and retainer clients are billed one month in arrears with no long contracts. Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Facebook Shop?

A Facebook Shop is a storefront on your business's Facebook Page that shows your products, collections and prices so people can browse them without leaving Facebook. When someone decides to buy, they are taken to your own online store to complete the purchase.

Is Facebook Shop free?

Setting up a Facebook Shop through Shopify's Facebook and Instagram channel costs nothing. Because customers now check out on your own store, you pay your normal Shopify and payment fees on the order. You only pay Meta if you choose to advertise.

Do Facebook Shops bring sales?

Yes, in our experience. All of our clients have Facebook or Instagram Shops connected, and across our clients they bring more sales than TikTok Shop. Beauty and cosmetics brands usually do well on Facebook Shop. Keep the catalogue clean and the tracking right so you can see those sales clearly.

Can customers check out on Facebook?

No. Shopify's help centre says customers are redirected to your online store to complete their purchase, and that Meta is no longer a marketplace tax facilitator for new orders created from 26 August 2025. That means you are responsible for the tax on these orders, as with any other sale on your store.

How do I connect Shopify to a Facebook Shop?

Add the Facebook and Instagram by Meta sales channel from the Shopify App Store, connect your Facebook account, business portfolio and Facebook Page, accept the terms and choose which products to share. Your products sync to a Meta catalogue, go through Meta's review, and then appear in your shop.

Why are my products not showing in my Facebook Shop?

The usual causes are products still in Meta's review, products rejected under Meta's Commerce Policy, items that are out of stock, or a store in private mode. Shopify also says products must be available for direct purchase from your verified domain, so check your domain and product settings.

Do I need an ad account for a Facebook Shop?

No. Shopify says an ad account is only needed if you want to run ad campaigns. You do need a Facebook Page owned by your business portfolio, with full control of both, and a business located in one of Meta's supported countries for Shops.

Does a Facebook Shop also set up Instagram Shopping?

The same channel uses a single product catalogue for shops on Facebook and Instagram and for ads. To sell on Instagram you also need an Instagram professional account linked to your Facebook Page that meets Meta's commerce eligibility requirements.

Final Thoughts

A Facebook Shop is quick and free to set up from Shopify, and because checkout now happens on your own store, it fits neatly alongside everything else you do. It brings sales in its own right, and beauty and cosmetics brands usually do well with it. The catalogue behind it also powers Instagram Shopping and Meta's catalogue ads.
