Choosing a web development agency is not just a matter of finding the portfolio you like most. For an ecommerce business, the agency affects which platform you use, how well the site connects to your other systems, what it costs to run, how fast your team can make changes and who is responsible when something breaks after launch, so choosing the platform and choosing the agency are closely linked decisions.
This guide profiles ten web development agencies serving UK ecommerce businesses across Shopify, WooCommerce, Adobe Commerce, BigCommerce, WordPress, headless and bespoke builds. For each one we checked the agency's own website on 1 October 2026 for its platforms, support after launch and, because so few show it, whether it publishes a price.
A note on our own position. Why Matters is a Shopify agency, so we appear in this list, first and labelled as our agency. The other nine follow in alphabetical order, described in the same format and judged on the same criteria. Details about other agencies come from their own websites, Clutch and Shopify's Partner Directory, so check them before you shortlist, because services and prices change.
The best web development agency depends on your platform, budget and complexity. For Shopify and Shopify Plus brands that want development, a published price, a three month guarantee and ongoing marketing support from one team, Why Matters is built for that, and Swanky is the other Shopify specialist here. Elogic, Vaimo and Tom&Co suit complex Adobe Commerce and enterprise work, CTI Digital, Glass Atlas and FDRY cover several platforms, Cyber-Duck suits complex UX and integration, and Propeller suits consumer and hospitality brands. Shortlist three that work on your platform and give each the same brief.
We compared every agency, including our own, on six things: the platforms it covers, real ecommerce experience rather than brochure sites, published pricing, guarantees or commercial terms it states publicly, independent signals such as Clutch and official partner directories, and what it offers after launch. Agencies without a public price list were not excluded, because complex projects often need discovery before anyone can price them, but transparency counted in an agency's favour because it tells you early whether an agency works at the £5,000, £50,000 or £500,000 end of the market.
We gave particular weight to support after launch, because ecommerce development does not stop on launch day. Integrations fail, themes and extensions change, performance drifts and the business keeps asking for new features, so a good proposal separates defects covered by the build from routine maintenance, emergency support, updates, security, performance work and new development.

Location: Brighton. Platforms: Shopify and Shopify Plus. Published price: Shopify builds from £2,000; support from £400; retainers from £650 a month plus VAT. Guarantee: three months on every development project. Notable clients: HOLOS, Dotty Dungarees, Mama Bamboo. Website: Why Matters Shopify developers.
Why Matters is a Shopify specialist rather than a multi platform agency, building new stores, redesigns, migrations, integrations and custom features, then supporting them alongside SEO, PPC, email, subscriptions and conversion work. We publish our prices. Development projects are scoped, with indicative ranges of £2,000 to £5,000 for theme customisation, £5,000 to £20,000+ for a custom theme and £15,000 to £50,000+ for Shopify Plus; support retainers start at £650 a month plus VAT, billed one month in arrears with no long contract; and prepaid support starts at £400 for our four hour Welcome Package or £450 for a five hour block, all on our Shopify packages page.
Every development project carries a three month guarantee. After launch, we respond to client requests within 24 hours, by email, phone or in weekly calls, with no ticket system to wait in, and our Shopify migrations normally take less than two weeks, depending on how many products need moving. We are a Shopify Select partner with Verified Skills across development and marketing, and have been a Shopify Partner since 2018.
Best for: UK Shopify and Shopify Plus brands that want development, a fixed guarantee and ongoing ecommerce marketing from one specialist team. If your business needs Adobe Commerce, WooCommerce or a bespoke stack, another agency here will suit you better.
Location: Manchester and Lancaster. Platforms: Shopify Plus, BigCommerce and Adobe Commerce. Published price: not on its website; Clutch lists a $10,000 minimum project. Website: CTI Digital website.
CTI Digital works across three major commerce platforms rather than one, which suits businesses that know they need to replatform but have not yet chosen between Shopify Plus, BigCommerce and Adobe Commerce. It also publishes managed hosting and support with proactive monitoring and access to engineers, treating support as an ongoing technical service rather than a short fix window after launch.
Best for: mid market and larger retailers whose site sits inside a wider hosting, integration or marketing operation.
Location: London. Platforms: BigCommerce, Shopify, Aero Commerce and bespoke applications. Published price: not on its website; Clutch lists a $5,000 minimum project. Website: Cyber-Duck website.
Cyber-Duck now trades as part of CACI Digital Experience, so its ecommerce work sits inside a broader digital transformation offer covering UX, accessibility, service design and systems integration. That suits projects where the hard part is connecting a complicated service or workflow around the store, though a straightforward Shopify theme project is unlikely to need a team of that size.
Best for: organisations with complex UX, accessibility or integration needs around their ecommerce.
Location: London office, headquartered in Tallinn. Platforms: Adobe Commerce, Shopify Plus, BigCommerce, Salesforce Commerce Cloud and commercetools. Published price: £25,000 to £500,000+ for typical UK projects. Website: Elogic Commerce website.
Elogic is one of only two agencies here that publishes a price, and its range shows why a single average website cost means little: a business connecting its store to NetSuite, SAP or Dynamics 365, a PIM and several markets is buying something very different from a theme customisation. It focuses on B2B, ERP integration and replatforming, offers SLA backed managed support and holds a 5.0 rating from 64 reviews on Clutch.
Best for: mid market and enterprise businesses with B2B, ERP integration or replatforming projects.
Location: London. Platforms: Shopify, WooCommerce, Adobe Commerce, BigCommerce and WordPress. Published price: fixed price after scoping, with no starting price published. Website: FDRY website.
FDRY covers a wide range of platforms, which helps if you want to compare Shopify, WooCommerce and larger platforms before committing, and it fixes the price once requirements are scoped. A fixed price only gives certainty if the scope is clear, so check what it includes for integrations, migration, redirects, content entry, testing and post launch fixes; its published support retainers are WordPress focused, so confirm the equivalent for an ecommerce platform.
Best for: brands wanting ecommerce development and digital marketing from one London agency.
Location: Manchester. Platforms: Shopify, BigCommerce and Adobe Commerce. Published price: not on its website; Shopify's Partner Directory lists selected services from $8,000. Website: Glass Atlas website.
Glass Atlas is the group that brought together Space 48, Brave The Skies, This is Digital and Bring Digital, so it is the current name if you have met Space 48 in older agency lists. It publishes maintenance and support covering monitoring, security and performance across its platforms, and Shopify's Partner Directory lists it as a Platinum Partner with a 5.0 rating from 11 reviews.
Best for: established retailers replatforming or integrating complex commerce systems.
Location: London. Platforms: Shopify, WordPress and bespoke web development. Published price: tailored quotes, with no standard price published. Website: Propeller website.
Propeller combines web development with a wider digital agency offer, covering Shopify design, development, migration and post launch work alongside strong WordPress capability, with ongoing maintenance through retainers. Its own guidance puts smaller builds at around six to ten weeks and larger ones at 12 to 18 weeks, which are useful planning benchmarks if your content, data and approvals arrive on time. It holds a 4.9 rating on Clutch.
Best for: consumer, hospitality and lifestyle brands wanting design, development and ongoing digital services together.
Location: Exeter, with an international presence. Platforms: Shopify and Shopify Plus. Published price: not on its website; Shopify's Partner Directory lists selected services from $1,500. Website: Swanky website.
Swanky specialises in Shopify and Shopify Plus and positions itself as a long term growth partner rather than a launch only build team, and Shopify's Partner Directory lists it as a Platinum Partner with a 5.0 rating from 35 reviews. Like any Shopify specialist, it is less relevant while WooCommerce or Adobe Commerce is still on your list, and more relevant once Shopify is decided.
Best for: established Shopify Plus brands focused on international growth and subscriptions.
Location: London. Platforms: Adobe Commerce and Magento, including headless builds. Published price: quoted after discovery, with Adobe licensing a separate cost. Website: Tom&Co website.
Tom&Co is an Adobe Commerce specialist, scoping each project after discovery. Its retainers cover monitoring, security patches, version upgrades, bug fixes and an ongoing development allowance, which is the kind of support a complex self managed commerce platform needs. Choose it because your requirements justify Adobe Commerce, not the other way round.
Best for: larger retailers with complex Adobe Commerce estates and substantial integrations.
Location: London and international offices. Platforms: Adobe Commerce led, with composable, content and data technologies. Published price: not on its website; Clutch lists a $100,000 minimum project. Website: Vaimo website.
Vaimo works at the enterprise end, covering commerce architecture, data, content, integrations and technical operations, with SLA management, monitoring, security, DevOps and 24/7 support options. That suits retailers with several markets, complex back office systems and a large internal digital team, and would be unnecessary overhead for a merchant whose main need is a well built Shopify store.
Best for: large and international businesses where ecommerce is part of a wider enterprise programme.
Only two of the ten agencies publish a price on their own website: Why Matters, with indicative Shopify project ranges, support packages and retainers, and Elogic, with a typical UK project range of £25,000 to £500,000+. Swanky and Glass Atlas show starting figures for selected services in Shopify's Partner Directory, CTI Digital, Cyber-Duck and Vaimo show minimum project sizes on Clutch, and FDRY, Propeller and Tom&Co quote only after scoping.
Those figures cover different services, platforms and scopes, so they cannot be averaged into a UK market price. For Shopify budgets, see how much it costs to build a Shopify store and what UK Shopify agencies publish about their pricing.
There is no reliable single price for an ecommerce website, because a small business adapting a Shopify theme and a retailer replacing an enterprise platform can both call their project a rebuild with budgets hundreds of thousands of pounds apart. What moves the price:
Ask every agency to quote against the same written brief, or two headline prices will tell you very little.
Usually, narrow the platform before you make the final agency decision. A good discovery process may change your mind, but choosing an agency first and accepting its favourite technology risks a platform that suits the supplier rather than the business.
| Platform | Best when |
|---|---|
| Shopify | You want hosting, security and platform updates handled for you |
| WooCommerce | WordPress matters and you want control of hosting and data |
| Adobe Commerce | You have complex B2B needs or heavy integrations |
| BigCommerce | You want hosted SaaS with strong APIs and headless options |
| Custom or headless | Standard platforms truly cannot do the job |
Shopify removes the server work, though themes, apps, integrations and custom code still need maintaining. WooCommerce gives control over hosting and data, at the cost of someone owning hosting, backups, updates and security. Adobe Commerce offers company accounts, shared catalogues and quotes for complex B2B, and BigCommerce describes itself as Open SaaS. Custom is not automatically better: it means more code to own, test and support, so ask what measurable requirement justifies it. If Shopify is your direction, our guide to choosing a Shopify development company covers the specialist questions.
A polished pitch does not tell you how a project will run. Before you appoint anyone, get clear answers to these:
The contract itself should set out the scope and exclusions, milestones and acceptance, the timeline and your dependencies, payment terms, change control, ownership, third party costs such as themes, apps and licences, the guarantee or defect period and any ongoing support, with response times and notice periods. Compare total cost, not headline price:
The first weeks after launch deserve close attention, because real customers use a site differently from a project team, but good ecommerce support goes well beyond an initial bug fixing window. Agree who owns each of these before you sign:
We specialise in Shopify rather than trying to be a development agency for every platform. That has an obvious limit: if Adobe Commerce, WooCommerce or a bespoke application is genuinely the right choice, another agency in this guide will serve you better. The advantage is focus, because our developers, marketers and ecommerce specialists work in the same platform every day, which makes it easier to connect development decisions with technical SEO, conversion, subscriptions, email and paid acquisition.
We also think buyers should look past the build quote. What happens if something is wrong after launch, who supports you in six months and how quickly can the agency make a small change matter as much as the homepage design. That is why we publish our prices, give a three month guarantee on development projects, answer requests within 24 hours and offer retainers from £650 a month plus VAT with no long contract. Every agency does not need the same commercial model, but you should understand yours before you commit.
What does a web development agency do?
A web development agency plans, designs, builds, tests and maintains websites and web applications. For ecommerce that also covers platform setup, payments, product and customer migration, integrations, analytics, SEO redirects, performance and support after launch.
How much does a website cost in the UK?
There is no single price. Why Matters publishes indicative Shopify ranges of £2,000 to £5,000 for theme customisation, £5,000 to £20,000+ for a custom theme and £15,000 to £50,000+ for Shopify Plus, while Elogic publishes £25,000 to £500,000+ for its UK projects.
Which web development agencies publish their prices?
In this guide, only Why Matters and Elogic publish prices on their own websites. Swanky and Glass Atlas show starting figures in Shopify's Partner Directory, CTI Digital, Cyber-Duck and Vaimo show Clutch minimums, and the rest quote after scoping.
How do I choose a web development company?
Decide your requirements and likely platform first, then compare agencies with relevant experience against the same written brief, checking what the price includes, ownership terms, testing, guarantees and support after launch.
Should I use a Shopify specialist or a general agency?
If you have chosen Shopify, a specialist brings deeper knowledge of the platform, its apps and its limits. A multi platform agency is more useful while the platform decision is still open or your systems span several technologies.
How long does a website build take?
It depends on scope, approvals, data and integrations. Propeller publishes six to ten weeks for smaller builds and 12 to 18 weeks for larger ones, while Why Matters' Shopify migrations normally take under two weeks, depending on how many products need moving.
Do agencies support the site after launch?
Many do, but the model varies: a guarantee period, prepaid hours, a monthly retainer or a formal SLA. Why Matters gives a three month guarantee on development projects, with retainers from £650 a month plus VAT.
Choosing a web development agency gets much easier once you stop treating every website project as comparable. Establish what the business needs, narrow the platform, then shortlist agencies that work on that platform at your level of complexity and give each the same brief. Compare what is included and excluded, relevant experience, the team, timeline assumptions, data and integration work, testing, ownership, the guarantee, support after launch and the total ongoing cost.
A £20,000 proposal is not cheaper than a £30,000 one if it leaves another £15,000 of essential migration, integration and support work to buy later. If Shopify is your platform, see how we work on our Shopify developers page.
Tell us a little about your store and we'll get back to you within 24 hours.
