Generative engine optimisation means making your store's content easy for AI search tools to find, trust and cite. For a Shopify store that means indexed pages with clear answers to buyers' questions, complete product data in Google Merchant Center, original information such as your own data, and genuine mentions in reviews, press and comparison articles. Google says this is still SEO, needs no special files or markup, and can be measured with the Generative AI performance report in Search Console.
Shoppers increasingly ask an AI assistant before they search: which running shoes suit flat feet, what the best refillable cleaning brand is, whether a product ships to Ireland. The answer they get names a handful of brands and links to a few sources. GEO is about being one of them. This guide is for store owners; if you write the content yourself, our guide to writing Shopify blogs that rank and get cited by AI covers the writing side in detail.
The term was coined in a 2023 research paper, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", by researchers including Pranjal Aggarwal and Ameet Deshpande. It describes AI search tools as generative engines, because they write a new answer from several sources rather than listing links, and reports that content changes could raise a source's visibility in those answers by up to 40%. The authors also found that what works varies by subject, so there is no single trick.
You will also see answer engine optimisation (AEO) and AI SEO used for much the same thing. AEO is the older term, from the days of featured snippets and voice assistants; GEO covers AI tools that compose their own answers. The practical work is the same.
AI answers take clicks that used to go to the top results. Ahrefs' February 2026 study of 300,000 keywords found the top result's click through rate on informational keywords with an AI Overview fell from 7.3% in December 2023 to 1.6% in December 2025, an estimated 58% reduction attributable to the AI Overview. When fewer people click, being named and linked inside the answer becomes the visibility that counts.
Some of our clients now see up to 5% of their traffic coming from AI tools.
For stores the effect reaches beyond informational content. AI assistants now answer product questions, compare brands and, increasingly, help shoppers buy. Our guide to agentic commerce for Shopify stores covers the buying side; this guide covers being found and cited.
Google's guide to its generative AI features, last updated on 10 July 2026, is the clearest primary source, and it cuts through a lot of noise:
For an online store, AI answers draw on three kinds of source. You control the first two directly and influence the third.
Treat every one of these numbers as a guide. Tracking AI search is still new and can be inaccurate, and being cited does not always bring a click that analytics can see. Look at citations, enquiries and sales together before deciding whether GEO is working; our own site, described below, shows why.
We treat GEO as good SEO with a sharper focus on being quotable and being mentioned. The stores that appear in AI answers usually already do the basics well: clear pages, complete product data, real reviews and coverage on other sites. What changes is the measure. We track clients' AI mentions and citations with Ahrefs Brand Radar and Bing Webmaster Tools alongside their Google rankings, and our AI SEO work includes digital PR, partner listings and review programmes.
The early results are real but hard to measure. Some of our clients now see up to 5% of their traffic coming from AI tools. Our own site has a lot of AI citations in Ahrefs and the number is growing, yet AI sessions have not grown to match, while our overall traffic and enquiries have risen. So we would not judge GEO on AI referral sessions alone.
We are a Shopify Select partner with Verified Skills across development and marketing, our pricing is published, and retainer clients are billed one month in arrears with no long contracts. For a free AI visibility audit of your store, visit our AI SEO agency page.
What is generative engine optimisation?
Generative engine optimisation, or GEO, is the work of making your content more likely to be used and cited in answers from AI search tools such as Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity. The term comes from a 2023 research paper, which found that the right content changes could raise visibility in AI answers by up to 40%.
Is GEO different from SEO?
Mostly not. Google says optimising for its generative AI features is still SEO: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. GEO adds emphasis on clear, quotable answers, original information and being mentioned by other trusted sites, which good SEO already rewards.
What is the difference between GEO and AEO?
Answer engine optimisation, or AEO, is an older term for structuring content so search engines and voice assistants can lift a direct answer from it. Generative engine optimisation covers AI tools that write their own answers from several sources. In practice the two overlap heavily, and the same work serves both.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
Not for Google. Google says you do not need new machine readable files, AI text files, markup or Markdown to appear in Google Search, and that Google Search ignores them. Spend the time on content and product data instead.
How can a Shopify store appear in ChatGPT or Google AI answers?
Make sure your pages are indexed, write clear answers to the questions buyers ask, keep product data complete in Google Merchant Center, publish original information such as your own data and guides, and earn genuine mentions in reviews, press and comparison articles. Google says Merchant Center can help products appear in AI responses.
How do I measure traffic from AI search?
Use the Generative AI performance report in Google Search Console for Google's AI features, and look in GA4 for referral sessions from AI assistants such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. Brand monitoring tools can also track how often AI answers mention or cite your store. Treat the figures as a guide, because tracking AI search is still new and can be inaccurate.
Does structured data help with AI search?
Google says structured data is not required for its generative AI features and that no special schema markup is needed. It still recommends structured data for rich results, and accurate product data helps search engines understand your catalogue, so keep it in place.
Generative engine optimisation sounds new, but for an online store most of it is familiar work done more carefully: clear answers, complete product data, original information and a reputation that other sites confirm. Google's own guidance says as much.
