Singles Day is an online shopping event on 11 November, created by Alibaba in 2009 from a Chinese celebration of being single. In 2026 it falls on Wednesday 11 November, 16 days before Black Friday. UK Shopify brands can use it for a short, themed campaign, such as treat yourself offers, single item gift sets or early access to Black Friday for subscribers. Keep the offer different from your Black Friday deal, schedule it in Shopify with active dates, and measure it on new customers and margin.
Singles Day is the biggest shopping event many UK store owners have never planned for. It is still small in Britain, which is exactly why it can help: a well judged Singles Day campaign gets attention in a quiet week, tests your messages before Black Friday and gives subscribers a reason to open your emails.
Singles Day began as an informal celebration among young people in China, a day for single people to treat themselves and each other. The date, 11.11, is made up of four ones, which are commonly read as standing for single people.
According to Alibaba's own history of the event, the shopping festival debuted in 2009 as a 24 hour online sale hosted by Tmall.com, and just 27 Tmall merchants joined that first year. Alibaba says 11 November was chosen because the date is easy to remember and falls during a lull in spending between China's National Day and Chinese New Year holidays. It has since grown into one of the largest shopping events in the world.
In the UK, Singles Day is far smaller than Black Friday and is promoted mainly by marketplaces and international retailers. For most UK shoppers it is not a fixed date in the calendar yet, which has two consequences for a Shopify brand:
In words: Singles Day is on Wednesday 11 November, Black Friday on Friday 27 November and Cyber Monday on Monday 30 November, leaving 16 days between Singles Day and Black Friday.
| Run a Singles Day campaign if | Skip it if |
|---|---|
| Your products suit self gifting or treats | Your margin cannot carry another offer before Black Friday |
| You have an engaged email or SMS list | Your whole plan relies on one big Black Friday discount |
| You sell to younger or international shoppers | Your stock for Christmas is tight |
| You want to test messages before Black Friday | You have no time to plan it properly this year |
Shopify discounts keep their own active dates, and Shopify's discount management guide explains how rollouts can schedule when a discount is activated or deactivated. That means the whole campaign can run on its own:
The risk with Singles Day is weakening Black Friday. Across our clients, apart from the code given to first time customers and newsletter sign ups, a Black Friday discount code is normally the code that generates the most revenue, most likely because it is time specific and heavily promoted by email. Running the same discount on 11 November gives customers a reason to buy early at a discount or, worse, to wait for something bigger.
Keep the two clearly different. Use Singles Day for a smaller, themed offer, a different product range or early access, and save your strongest deal for Black Friday. Our Shopify Black Friday guide covers the main event, and the ecommerce marketing calendar shows how both fit into the year.
Check the maths before choosing a discount. On a £48 order with a 55% gross margin, 11% off costs £5.28 and leaves £21.12 of margin before delivery, payment and advertising costs. Our ROAS calculator shows how a discount changes the return you need from ads.
We see Singles Day as a useful warm up rather than a main event for UK Shopify brands. Its value is the attention it gets in a quiet week, the subscribers it adds before Black Friday and the chance to test subject lines, creative and offers when the stakes are lower. The brands that get it wrong treat it as an extra Black Friday and pay for it in margin.
The highest revenue email campaign across our clients is a deliberately generous code for customers about to lapse or subscribers yet to buy, followed by a reminder that it expires at midnight tonight. A Singles Day version of that, aimed only at those groups, often beats a sitewide sale. We are a Shopify Select partner and a Klaviyo, Meta and TikTok partner, our pricing is published, and retainer clients are billed one month in arrears with no long contracts. What is Singles Day?
Singles Day is a shopping event held on 11 November. It began as an informal Chinese celebration of being single, and Alibaba's Tmall turned it into a 24 hour online sale in 2009. It has since grown into one of the biggest shopping days in the world, and some UK retailers and marketplaces now run Singles Day offers too.
When is Singles Day 2026?
Singles Day 2026 is on Wednesday 11 November. That is 16 days before Black Friday on Friday 27 November, so any Singles Day campaign needs to be planned alongside your Black Friday offer rather than separately.
Why is Singles Day on 11 November?
The date 11.11 is made up of four ones, which are commonly read as standing for single people. Alibaba's own history says Tmall chose 11 November for its sale because the date is easy to remember and falls in a quiet spell for spending between China's National Day and Chinese New Year holidays.
Is Singles Day celebrated in the UK?
It is much smaller in the UK than in China, and is promoted mainly by marketplaces and international retailers. For most UK shoppers it is not yet a fixed date in the calendar, so a Singles Day campaign is a chance to stand out rather than compete with every other retailer.
Should I run a Singles Day sale and a Black Friday sale?
Only if the two offers are different enough not to undercut each other. A small, short Singles Day offer, such as a self gift bundle or early access for subscribers, can work well. Running the same discount twice in 16 days usually teaches customers to wait and weakens Black Friday.
What discount should I offer on Singles Day?
Keep it modest and on theme. An 11% discount, a single item gift set or a free gift on orders over a set value all link to the date. On a £48 order, 11% off costs £5.28, which leaves £21.12 of margin at a 55% gross margin before other costs.
How do I schedule a Singles Day sale in Shopify?
Create the discount in advance and give it active dates from midnight to 23:59 on 11 November, so it starts and ends on its own. Pair it with a Singles Day collection page, schedule the emails and texts in your email platform, and check the discount on a test order before the day.
Singles Day gives UK Shopify brands a date in a quiet part of November to get attention, grow their list and test messages before Black Friday. It works best as a small, themed campaign with a clear idea.
