Key Takeaways

  • An Instagram Shop is a storefront on your business profile, built from the same catalogue as your Facebook Shop and Meta ads.
  • Checkout no longer happens in Instagram: Shopify says customers are redirected to your online store to complete their purchase.
  • You need an Instagram professional account linked to your Facebook Page, a business portfolio with full control, and a business in a supported country.
  • Products must require shipping, have a return policy and a Google product category, meet Meta's catalogue specifications and not be free.
  • Instagram removed the Shop tab from its navigation bar in February 2023, so product tags in posts and Reels do most of the selling.
  • Creator content sells: adding creator videos and social proof to Awake Organics' product pages lifted add to cart rate by 23%.
  • All of our clients have Facebook or Instagram Shops connected, and across our clients they bring more sales than TikTok Shop.

Quick Answer

To set up an Instagram Shop from Shopify, add the Facebook and Instagram by Meta sales channel, connect your business portfolio, Facebook Page and Instagram professional account, and share your products. Once your account meets Meta's commerce eligibility requirements and products are approved, you can tag products in posts and Reels. Shoppers browse in Instagram, then check out on your Shopify store. Results come from the content: creator videos and Reels with tagged products do most of the selling.

Table of Contents

Instagram is where many shoppers first see a product they later buy. An Instagram Shop turns that moment into a shorter path: tap a tagged product, see the price and details, and go straight to your store. This guide covers setting one up from Shopify and making it sell. If you also want a shop on Facebook, our guide to Facebook Shop for Shopify covers that side, because both use the same catalogue.

What Is an Instagram Shop?

An Instagram Shop is a storefront on your business profile showing your products and prices. You can tag those products in posts and Reels, so people can tap through to a product page inside Instagram and then to your store to buy.

In words: a shopper sees a post or Reel with a product tag, opens the product page inside Instagram, then checks out on your Shopify store. Shopify's channel requirements confirm that customers are redirected to your online store to complete purchases, and that Meta is no longer a marketplace tax facilitator for new orders created from 26 August 2025.

Instagram has also changed where shopping sits in the app. It removed the Shop tab from the main navigation bar in February 2023, replacing it with shortcuts for creating content and for Reels, while saying shops would carry on as usual. In practice, people now find products through tags in content rather than by browsing a shop tab.

What You Need Before You Start

Shopify's requirements and Instagram's commerce eligibility requirements set out what is needed:

RequirementWhat it means
Instagram professional accountA business or creator account associated with your business's Facebook Page
Facebook Page and business portfolioThe portfolio must own the Page, and your account needs full control of both
Supported countryYour business must be in one of Meta's supported countries for Shops
Shopify online storeNot in private mode, with a valid sender email
Products for sale on your domainAvailable to buy directly from your verified domain
PoliciesYour Page and account must follow Meta's terms, and products its Commerce Policy

How to Set Up an Instagram Shop From Shopify

  1. Switch to a professional account in Instagram's settings if you have not already, and link it to your business's Facebook Page.
  2. Check ownership: make sure your business portfolio owns the Page and that you have full control of both.
  3. Add the Facebook and Instagram by Meta sales channel in Shopify and connect your portfolio, Page and Instagram account.
  4. Make products available to the channel, individually or in bulk. Shopify says changes usually sync within a few minutes.
  5. Wait for Meta's review of your account and products, then turn on shopping in Instagram's settings.
  6. Start tagging products in new posts and Reels, and add tags to your best existing posts.

Note that making a product available applies it to every Facebook and Instagram feature at once; Shopify says you cannot share a product with only one of them. Shopify collections only sync to Facebook for stores in the United States, so UK stores group products in Meta's Commerce Manager.

Why Products Get Rejected

Shopify's publishing guide lists what makes a product eligible. Most rejections come from one of these:

  • No shipping required: digital products and services do not qualify.
  • No return policy set on the store.
  • No Google product category assigned to the product.
  • Images, titles or descriptions that do not meet Meta's catalogue specifications.
  • Restricted products under Meta's Commerce Policy.
  • A price of zero, because free products are not eligible.

The same feed hygiene helps Google too. Of the Google Merchant Center disapprovals we fixed across client stores this year, 40% were shipping settings, 30% missing barcodes and 30% policy issues.

Tagging Products in Posts and Reels

Product tags are now the heart of Instagram selling. Tag products in feed posts, carousels and Reels, and use the same products consistently so people see them more than once. Some practical points:

  • Tag your best performing existing posts as well as new ones.
  • Tag one to three products per post so the choice stays clear.
  • Use Reels for demonstrations and carousels for ranges, colours and before and after.
  • Work with creators on collaborative posts so tagged products reach their audience too.

Content That Sells on Instagram

The shop is only a shelf; the content brings people to it. What works for product brands is consistent, and it is rarely polished advertising:

  1. Creator and customer videos. When Halo Coffee added creator videos, its cost per sale on Meta fell by 27% between 2018 and 2021.
  2. Product in use. Show the product being used, worn or unboxed in the first second.
  3. Social proof. Adding creator videos and other social proof icons to Awake Organics' product pages lifted add to cart rate by 23%, and the same content works on Instagram.
  4. Clear prices and delivery. Tagged products show prices; make sure your delivery terms are as clear on the product page.

Our guides to user generated content and Shopify Collabs explain how to source creator content.

Using Your Instagram Shop With Ads

The catalogue behind your Instagram Shop also powers Meta's catalogue ads, which show people the products they viewed or similar ones across Instagram and Facebook. These usually need reliable tracking: our guide to the Meta Pixel and Conversions API explains the setup. Boosting tagged posts that already sell organically is a simple way to start.

Why Matters Perspective

We are a Meta partner and set up the Facebook and Instagram channel for most of the Shopify stores we build, and all of our clients have Facebook or Instagram Shops connected. They bring sales: across our clients, more than TikTok Shop, and on Facebook Shop, beauty and cosmetics brands usually do well. The setup is quick when ownership is right and the catalogue is clean; most delays we see come from Pages owned by a former agency or freelancer, or products missing a return policy or category.

Once it is live, content and ads decide how much it sells. Ad accounts and pages we set up always belong to the client, and we work to a floor of at least 2x ROAS across the accounts we manage. We are a Shopify Select partner, our pricing is published, and retainer clients are billed one month in arrears with no long contracts. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Instagram Shop?

An Instagram Shop is a storefront on a business's Instagram profile, built from its product catalogue, that lets people browse products and see prices without leaving Instagram. Brands can also tag products in posts and Reels. When someone decides to buy, they are taken to the brand's own online store to check out.

How do I set up an Instagram Shop with Shopify?

Add the Facebook and Instagram by Meta sales channel in Shopify, connect your business portfolio, Facebook Page and Instagram professional account, and choose which products to share. Once your account meets Meta's commerce eligibility requirements and your products are approved, you can turn on shopping and tag products.

Can customers check out on Instagram?

No. Shopify's help centre says customers are redirected to your online store to complete their purchase, so every order comes through your own Shopify checkout. Meta is also no longer a marketplace tax facilitator for new orders created from 26 August 2025.

Why is my Instagram Shop not approved?

The usual reasons are an Instagram account that is not a professional account linked to your Facebook Page, a business portfolio that does not own the Page, a business outside Meta's supported countries, or products that break Meta's Commerce Policy. Check each against Meta's commerce eligibility requirements and Shopify's channel requirements.

Can I sell digital products on an Instagram Shop?

Not through Shopify's channel. Shopify says a product must require shipping to be eligible, so digital products do not qualify. It must also have a return policy and a Google product category, meet Meta's image, title and description specifications, and not be free.

Is there still a Shop tab on Instagram?

Instagram removed the Shop tab from its main navigation bar in February 2023, replacing it with shortcuts for creating content and for Reels. Shops still exist on business profiles, and product tags in posts and Reels remain the main way people find products.

Do I need a Facebook Page for an Instagram Shop?

Yes. Shopify says that to sell on Instagram your account must be a professional account associated with your business's Facebook Page, and that the Page must be connected to a business portfolio you have full control of.

Final Thoughts

An Instagram Shop gives your products a place on the app where many shoppers discover brands, and with checkout on your own store, every sale lands in Shopify. Setting it up takes an hour when the accounts and catalogue are in order.

The selling is done by content: creator videos, Reels and tagged posts that show the product clearly. If you would like us to set it up or plan the content, email us.
