Ecommerce SEO is no longer just about ranking a category page in ten blue links. Shoppers now find products through Google Shopping, AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, social platforms and marketplace search, yet traditional SEO has not gone away: Google says its generative features still rely on its core ranking and quality systems, so pages must be crawlable, indexed and useful before they can be cited. The job has widened, covering technical SEO, collection and product pages, architecture, structured data, feeds, content, digital PR, migrations, conversion and AI search visibility.
This guide compares ten UK agencies with evidence of ecommerce search work, checked on 1 October 2026 for ecommerce results, platform expertise, AI search capability, pricing and independent reviews. Of the ten, nine offer a dedicated AI search or GEO service, and only two, Why Matters and ClickSlice, publish a monthly starting price. A note on our own position: Why Matters is a Shopify agency selling SEO, so we appear first and labelled as our agency, and this is not an independent ranking; the other nine follow in alphabetical order, judged on the same criteria from their own sites and Clutch, so check details before you shortlist.
A strong UK ecommerce SEO agency understands large catalogue technical problems, collection and product page optimisation, content, digital PR, migrations and AI search visibility. For Shopify brands that want SEO, AI search and the development needed to implement fixes under one roof, with a published price, Why Matters is built for that. NOVOS and Re:signal are ecommerce specialists for larger brands, Impression connects SEO with paid media and PR, Blue Array and StudioHawk are organic search specialists, Found and The SEO Works blend SEO with AI discovery, Propeller pairs SEO with Shopify builds, and ClickSlice publishes entry pricing.
We compared every agency, including our own, on five things: published ecommerce results, because online stores bring problems such as faceted navigation, variants, discontinued products, pagination, migrations and international stores; platform expertise across Shopify, Shopify Plus, Magento, WooCommerce and headless, which matters when recommendations need developers; AI search work, weighting measurable AI Overview, LLM citation and visibility reporting above a renamed service page; pricing transparency, from monthly prices and audit fees to verified project minimums; and independent reviews such as Clutch.

Location: Brighton. Specialism: Shopify SEO, ecommerce growth and AI search. AI search: dedicated AI SEO service. Published price: SEO retainer from £1,500 a month; free SEO audit. Website: Why Matters Shopify SEO agency.
Why Matters is a Shopify agency rather than a general SEO company, which changes how SEO gets done: if a collection template, schema or theme script needs fixing, our own developers fix it instead of leaving a ticket in a spreadsheet for someone else. Our Shopify SEO covers technical SEO, keyword research, collections, product pages, content, internal linking, Core Web Vitals, structured data and digital PR, and our AI SEO service adds AI visibility audits, citation monitoring, content built around buying questions, product data optimisation, brand mentions and reporting on AI referrals and sales.
Our audits show why implementation matters: of 265 Shopify stores we have audited, 196 were still on legacy themes, and 75 of the 80 stores we have migrated arrived without a redirect map, both problems an SEO report alone will not fix. We publish our prices, with a dedicated SEO retainer from £1,500 a month, and our free Shopify SEO audit covers technical, on page and off page SEO in a written, prioritised report within three to five working days, followed by a call about what to fix first.

Ecommerce SEO is not just blog posts. A good programme works on several parts of the store at once:
There is no standard UK tariff, and published prices show how wide the range is: Why Matters' SEO retainer starts at £1,500 a month and ClickSlice's search marketing at £2,500, Re:signal's AI audit costs from £10,000 with ongoing work quoted from its roadmap, and Clutch shows minimums of $5,000 for NOVOS and Blue Array, retainers from $5,000 a month for Impression, $10,000 for Propeller and $1,000 for StudioHawk. These are not like for like, because one £2,500 campaign may include technical work, content and links while another agency charges for each separately.
Cost depends on catalogue size, technical complexity, competition, markets, content, PR, development, AI reporting and migrations, so a 50 product UK Shopify brand needs far less than a retailer with 500,000 URLs. Ask how much senior time sits on the account and whether content, development, PR, links and AI tracking are included.
Yes, though SEO now covers more ground. Google's 2026 AI optimisation guidance says its SEO best practices remain relevant because AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems, retrieving relevant pages from its index, and its AI features documentation says there are no additional technical requirements: a page must be crawlable, indexed and eligible for a snippet. Google recommends valuable, unique, people first content with useful shopping information, images and video, so the job is not writing for a bot but making product and brand information clearer, more useful and more distinctive.
Other assistants such as ChatGPT use different systems and sources, so there is no universal way to rank first in every AI tool, which makes monitoring important: track real buying questions such as which dog food is best for sensitive stomachs, and record whether you appear, which competitors do and which sources are cited. Reports then combine Google rankings, AI citations and AI referral traffic rather than rankings alone; our guide to writing Shopify blogs that rank on Google and get cited by AI covers the content side.
Ask every shortlisted agency the same questions:
An audit should tell you what to do, not export 120 pages of crawler warnings. For an ecommerce store, it should review crawlability and indexation (robots.txt, sitemaps, canonicals, noindex and redirects), architecture and internal links, duplication from variants, filters and parameters, on page titles, headings and copy, structured data such as Product, Offer, AggregateRating and Breadcrumb, Core Web Vitals and app weight, content gaps, backlinks and competitor gaps, AI search visibility for buying questions, and real Analytics and Search Console data showing which issues already cost clicks and sales.
Our free Shopify SEO audit covers technical, on page and off page SEO. You send your store address and contact details and give us Google Search Console access, we deliver a written, prioritised report within three to five working days, then talk it through on a call, with no charge for either, and you can fix the issues yourself, pass them to your developer or ask us to implement them.
The biggest mistake in ecommerce SEO is separating the ranking from the store. Moving a category from eighth to third sounds like success, but if the page loads slowly, products are badly merchandised, filters fail on mobile, delivery is unclear or product pages do not convert, the extra traffic earns little. That is why we connect SEO with Shopify development and CRO: SEO says a collection deserves more traffic, CRO asks what happens when it arrives, and development builds what both need.
The same applies to AI search: a ChatGPT mention is interesting, but a citation that brings customers who buy is what counts, so we expect reports to combine visibility, non brand traffic, revenue, AI citations, AI referrals and conversion rather than swapping one vanity metric for another. Our Shopify SEO agency handles the technical and traditional side, and our AI SEO service covers AI discovery.
What is the best ecommerce SEO agency in the UK?
There is no single best agency for every store. Look for ecommerce results measured in revenue, technical skill on your platform, commercial reporting and an approach to AI search, and compare case studies rather than ranking claims.
What does an ecommerce SEO agency do?
It grows organic visibility for category, product and content pages through technical SEO, site architecture, keyword research, content, internal links, structured data, product feeds and digital PR, and increasingly tracks AI search citations too.
How much does ecommerce SEO cost in the UK?
It varies with catalogue size, competition and scope. Why Matters publishes an SEO retainer from £1,500 a month and ClickSlice from £2,500, while larger agencies quote bespoke projects, often with minimums of $5,000 or more.
Which SEO agencies publish their prices?
Of the ten agencies in this guide, only Why Matters and ClickSlice publish a monthly starting price on their own sites. Re:signal publishes its AI audit price, and the rest quote individually.
Is SEO dead now with AI?
No. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in its core Search ranking systems and need no extra technical requirements, so pages must still be crawlable, indexed, useful and eligible for a snippet.
How long does SEO take to work?
There is no fixed timetable. Technical fixes can move quickly, while competitive category terms take months; Propeller says ecommerce clients often see movement within three to six months and stronger revenue over six to twelve.
What should an SEO audit include?
Crawlability, indexation, site architecture, category and product pages, structured data, Core Web Vitals, internal links, content gaps, backlinks and AI visibility, prioritised by commercial impact. Our free Shopify audit is delivered within three to five working days.
For Shopify brands wanting SEO, development and AI search together, with a published price, start with Why Matters. For larger brands wanting ecommerce only specialists, compare NOVOS and Re:signal; for SEO inside a wider performance programme, Impression; for pure organic search, Blue Array and StudioHawk; for AI led discovery, Found, NOVOS, Re:signal and Impression; for a large UK team with GEO, The SEO Works; for SEO built into a Shopify project, Propeller; and for published entry pricing, ClickSlice.
Shortlist three, not ten, and give each your platform, revenue, organic revenue, key products, competitors, current SEO problems, development resource, markets and budget. Then ask what they would do in the first 90 days, why in that order and how they would prove commercial value, because that answer tells you more than any top ten list. See our Shopify SEO agency page or request our free Shopify SEO audit.
