Make Reels at 9:16 and 1080 by 1920 pixels, keep them under 3 minutes if you want new people to see them, and keep the product, text and logo in the middle of the frame, away from the top 14% and bottom 35% where Instagram's caption and buttons sit. Use up to 5 specific hashtags, post when Instagram's insights show your audience is active, tag the products in the reel, and judge each reel on the sales and sign ups it drives rather than the views.
Most advice on Reels is written for creators chasing followers. Product brands want something different: videos that show the product clearly on a phone screen, survive Instagram's overlays, reach people who have not followed yet and lead to a sale. This guide takes the specs from Instagram's own pages and adds what matters for a Shopify store.
Instagram's help page on reel sizes says you can upload a reel with an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 9:16, with a minimum resolution of 720 pixels and a minimum frame rate of 30 frames per second, and offers an upload at highest quality setting under media quality. In practice there is one format to use:
| Setting | What to use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Aspect ratio | 9:16, vertical | Fills the phone screen; anything wider shows with bars |
| Resolution | 1080 x 1920 pixels | Full HD at 9:16; Instagram's minimum is 720 |
| Frame rate | 30 frames per second or more | Instagram's stated minimum |
| Upload quality | Highest quality switched on | Avoids extra compression on product detail |
Square and landscape video can be uploaded, but it cannot fill a vertical screen, so product shots look smaller. Film vertical from the start rather than cropping.
Instagram's guide to creating a reel says you can record or upload one or more clips that add up to 20 minutes, and adds a line that matters more than the limit: reels over 3 minutes will not be recommended to new audiences. Recommendation is how a reel reaches people who do not follow you, which for a product brand is the whole point.
When a reel plays, Instagram lays its interface over the video: the caption, the account name and audio label at the bottom, and the like, comment and share buttons down the right. Meta's guidance on text overlays and the safe zone says to keep the top, bottom and sides free of key creative elements, text and logos, that Ads Manager has a safe zone guardrail you can toggle on, and that ads carrying a disclaimer should leave the bottom 40% clear. Meta's page does not give pixel figures; the common rule of thumb for a 1080 by 1920 frame is to keep the top 14%, about 270 pixels, and the bottom 35%, about 670 pixels, clear, which leaves a safe area about 980 pixels tall in the middle.
In words: put the product, any on screen text and the logo in the middle band, and treat the top and bottom as background. Taller phones can either zoom the video or show it at its original ratio, so nothing important should sit near any edge.
Instagram recommends a cover photo of 420 by 654 pixels, a 1:1.55 ratio, and says you cannot edit the cover photo after uploading. The cover is what shows on your profile grid, which for a product brand is a shop window. Choose a frame that shows the product and reads at thumbnail size, and keep any text near the centre.
In Instagram ranking explained, Adam Mosseri says that for Reels the app predicts how likely you are to reshare a reel, watch it all the way through, like it and visit the audio page, using your activity, your history with the poster, information about the reel such as its audio, visuals and popularity, and information about the poster. The same post says Instagram makes low resolution or watermarked reels, and reels already posted on Instagram, less visible, and that its recommendation guidelines apply to Reels. For a brand that means:
Instagram's hashtag help page says you can use up to 5 tags on a post, and its creators account announced in December 2025 that Instagram allows up to 5 hashtags in a reel or post. Adam Mosseri has said in his own Reels that hashtags do not improve reach but are a good way to tell people what a post is about. So: up to five, specific to the product and the audience, and no blocks of generic tags copied from post to post.
Instagram does not publish a best time. Its insights help page says audience insights include the times your followers are most active on Instagram, which is the figure to use, because it is your audience rather than an average. Third party studies give starting points, and they do not agree:
| Study | Finding | Dataset |
|---|---|---|
| Sprout Social, March 2026 | Mondays 2 to 4pm, Tuesdays 1 to 7pm, Wednesdays 12 to 9pm, Thursdays 12 to 2pm; Reels mirror these windows | Nearly 2 billion engagements across about 307,000 profiles, November 2025 to February 2026 |
| Later, April 2026 | Reels: 12am, with Monday the best day | Over 975,000 Reels and 6 million feed posts, January to October 2024 |
Sources: Sprout Social and Later, both reporting in local time across all industries. The gap between them is the lesson: start with your own insights, post at the same two or three times for a month, and compare reach and sales per reel rather than following a chart.
With a shop connected through the Facebook and Instagram channel, Instagram's product tagging help says you can tag up to 30 products or a collection in a reel, and viewers tap View products to see them. Instagram notes that reels with product tags are not eligible to be featured, so decide for each reel whether it is for reach or for sales. Our guide to the Instagram Shop covers the setup.
Trial reels, which Instagram rolled out to professional accounts in December 2024, are shown to non followers first, with engagement figures available after about 24 hours and the option to share to followers automatically if the reel performs well in its first 72 hours. They are a cheap way to test hooks and products on strangers before a reel reaches your own customers.
What sells is creator style content: the product in use, shown by someone the viewer trusts. When Halo Coffee added creator videos, its cost per sale on Meta fell by 27% between 2018 and 2021, and adding creator videos and social proof icons to Awake Organics' product pages lifted add to cart rate by 23%. The same videos work as Reels; see our guide to user generated content.
We run social and creator programmes for Shopify brands, and the Reels that sell are rarely the ones with the best production. They show the product doing its job, within the first second, in a frame that still reads once Instagram's caption and buttons are laid over it. Most of the fixes we make are mechanical: vertical instead of cropped, text moved out of the bottom third, the watermark removed, and the reel cut from two minutes to thirty seconds.
We are a Meta and TikTok partner and a Shopify Select partner with Verified Skills across development and marketing, so the Reels, the shop, the product pages and the ads can be planned as one. Ad accounts and pages we set up always belong to the client, our pricing is published, and retainer clients are billed one month in arrears with no long contracts. What are the dimensions of an Instagram Reel?
Reels are vertical video. Instagram's help centre says you can upload a reel with an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 9:16, with a minimum resolution of 720 pixels and a minimum frame rate of 30 frames per second. Full screen 9:16 at 1080 by 1920 pixels is the standard to film and export at, because it fills the phone screen and is what viewers expect.
How long can an Instagram Reel be?
Instagram's help centre says you can record or upload clips that add up to 20 minutes, and adds that reels over 3 minutes will not be recommended to new audiences. For a product brand trying to reach people who do not follow you, that makes 3 minutes the practical limit and 15 to 60 seconds the sweet spot.
What is the safe zone for Instagram Reels?
The safe zone is the central part of the frame that stays clear of Instagram's interface: the caption, the like and share buttons, the audio label and the profile name. Meta's guidance is to keep the top, bottom and sides free of key creative elements, text and logos, and to leave the bottom 40% clear if an ad carries a disclaimer. A common rule of thumb for a 1080 by 1920 frame is to keep the top 14% and the bottom 35% clear.
What size should a Reel cover image be?
Instagram recommends a cover photo of 420 by 654 pixels, a 1:1.55 ratio, and says you cannot edit the cover after uploading. Choose a frame or upload a cover that shows the product clearly, because the cover is what appears on your profile grid.
How many hashtags should I use on a Reel?
Up to five. Instagram announced in December 2025 that it allows up to 5 hashtags in a reel or post, and its head Adam Mosseri has said hashtags do not improve reach but help explain what a post is about. Use a few specific ones rather than a block of generic tags.
When is the best time to post Reels on Instagram?
When your own audience is online, which Instagram shows under audience insights as the times they are most active. As a starting point, Sprout Social's analysis of nearly 2 billion engagements found Instagram engagement strongest on weekdays from midday into the evening, and says the best times for Reels mirror those windows. Later's study of over 975,000 Reels found 12am and Mondays strongest, which shows how much the data varies.
Can I tag products in Reels?
Yes, if your shop is set up through the Facebook and Instagram channel. Instagram's help centre says you can tag up to 30 products or a collection in a reel, and viewers tap View products to see them. Instagram also notes that reels with product tags are not eligible to be featured.
The specs are simple: 9:16, 1080 by 1920, under 3 minutes, with the important parts in the middle of the frame. The judgement is in what you show and when, and Instagram's own insights answer the when better than any chart.
