Agentic commerce on Shopify means AI agents such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta recommend your products, and sometimes sell them, using data Shopify shares through Shopify Catalog. Eligible stores are opted in by default and manage it under Sales channels, then Agentic. ChatGPT sends buyers to your own checkout, while Copilot, Google and Meta can offer a direct checkout inside the chat, currently for US shoppers only. For a UK store, the job today is making products easy for AI agents to understand: complete descriptions, images, variants, reviews and policies, accurate stock, and a plan for tracking and email consent.
Agentic commerce is online shopping in which an AI agent does part of the work a shopper used to do alone. The customer describes what they need, and the agent narrows the options, checks price and availability and, in some channels, completes the purchase within the conversation (Shopify). A search for "men's waterproof walking boots" becomes a request such as "waterproof walking boots for a five day trip to Scotland, wide fit, under £140 and not too heavy", and the agent weighs every constraint at once.
Your store still matters, but customers may meet your product data, reviews, price and returns policy before they see your homepage. Shopify reports that AI driven traffic to its stores grew eight times year on year in the first quarter of 2026 and orders from AI powered searches nearly 13 times, with new buyers ordering through AI channels at nearly twice the rate of other channels. These are Shopify's own platform figures, and the page does not give starting volumes.
AI search answers questions and recommends products, and the purchase still happens on your site. An agent can also pick a variant, apply the shopper's criteria and start a checkout, so the real question is whether an AI system understands your catalogue well enough to recommend the right product. For the search side, including Google's AI Overviews, see our guide to Shopify SEO.
Shopify's approach has four connected parts, so you do not need a separate integration for each AI company. That shared layer matters more as agentic shopping spreads across platforms:
You cannot opt out of Shopify Catalog itself, only stop individual AI channels from using it, and inclusion does not guarantee that a product appears in an AI answer. If your key product data sits in metafields, metaobjects or tag prefixes, Catalog mapping tells Shopify where to read it.
With ChatGPT, the shopper pays on your normal checkout in an in app browser or a new tab, so Shopify says your checkout customisations, branding and payment methods carry over (Shopify Help Center). With Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta, the shopper can press Buy and pay in a simplified Shopify powered checkout without leaving the chat. In both cases you remain the merchant of record and handle fulfilment, returns and customer service.
Google launched the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) in January 2026, developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, as a shared language for agents and merchants (Google). OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) powers product discovery in ChatGPT, and OpenAI says Shopify product data already reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, with no extra work from merchants (OpenAI).
Shopify's agentic storefronts cover four external AI channels plus Shopify's own Shop app, and they work differently. Shopify says there are no fees for ChatGPT or for the direct checkouts on Copilot, Google and Meta beyond standard payment processing.
| Channel | How the shopper pays | Who qualifies |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Finds products in the chat, then pays on your checkout | Stores that sell to US customers, based anywhere |
| Microsoft Copilot | Direct checkout, or your checkout if you switch it off | Stores that sell to US customers; direct checkout for US shoppers only |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Direct checkout (still rolling out), or your checkout | Products in Google Merchant Center; direct checkout needs a US store selling to the US |
| Meta | Direct checkout on Facebook and Instagram, or your checkout | Stores that sell to US customers; direct checkout for US shoppers only |
| Shop app | Shopify's own AI shopping agent | Products published to your online store |
On 24 March 2026, OpenAI moved ChatGPT to richer product discovery and let merchants use their own checkout instead of its earlier Instant Checkout (OpenAI). Through Shopify, your store must sell to US customers, although it can be based elsewhere, and your terms of service, privacy policy and return and refund policy must be complete (Shopify Help Center). Articles quoting a ChatGPT checkout fee for Shopify stores are out of date.
All three offer a Shopify powered direct checkout that is shown only to US shoppers; anyone else is sent to your online store. Copilot and Meta need a store that sells to US customers, while Google's direct checkout, still rolling out, needs a US based store and products in Google Merchant Center (Shopify Help Center). Meta's version covers Facebook and Instagram, including shoppable ads.
Brands on Magento, WooCommerce or a custom platform can reach these channels through the Agentic plan without moving their store. In the UK it has no monthly fee and card rates from 2% plus 25p (Shopify UK), so a £45 order costs from £1.15 in card fees (£0.90 plus £0.25). Direct checkout starts switched off, each product needs an external product URL, and ChatGPT orders do not show in Shopify (Shopify Help Center). Our comparisons of Magento vs Shopify and WooCommerce vs Shopify cover a full move.
Yes for discovery, and only partly for buying. Shopify says purchasing across its AI channels is currently available to US buyers only, and that merchants will be ready by default when its partners expand to new regions (Shopify). The answer depends on whether you sell to the US.
If you sell to US customers, ChatGPT, Copilot and Meta are open to you, and US shoppers can use direct checkout on Copilot and Meta. If you sell only in the UK, AI tools can still find your products through web crawling and Google Merchant Center, and shoppers buy on your own checkout. Google's September 2026 update made its AI performance insights available in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the US, and starts its new checkout tools in the US (Google); the UK was not named.
Prepare rather than wait, because the same product data work improves Google Shopping, organic search, paid media and conversion. If you already ship to the US, set up Shopify Markets so that prices, taxes and delivery are right for US shoppers. If you sell only in the UK, hold off redesigning anything around direct checkout until it reaches UK shoppers.
A direct checkout is not a copy of your normal checkout. Shopify loads only the checkout blocks needed to complete the order, and several products and features are unsupported on Copilot, Google and Meta (Shopify Help Center).
A coffee shopper might find your House Blend at £14 through Copilot, but your subscribe and save option is missing, so the first order is a one time purchase. The consent gap matters just as much: if a consent block does not load, the buyer may not opt in to marketing and misses your welcome emails. Our guides to the best Shopify subscription apps and Klaviyo flows show what is at stake.
Decide channel by channel. Direct checkout suits simple, single purchase products, where fewer steps should mean more orders. For stores built on subscriptions, bundles, loyalty or upsells, sending shoppers to your own checkout currently keeps more value, and you are still discovered with it off. Open Sales channels, then Agentic, turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me and set each channel (Shopify Help Center).
No AI channel publishes its ranking formula, and each reorders results with its own logic, but Shopify gives clear clues. Its search preview tool under Sales channels, then Agentic, scores each listing on description completeness, image coverage, reviews from trusted sources, variant and option completeness, and store policy completeness, while popularity and brand recognition also count (Shopify Help Center). As the illustration shows, each part of an AI product card comes from your data: images from product media, the name and options from titles and variants, price and stock from inventory, the rating from verified reviews, the returns line from your policies, and the Buy button from your checkout or the channel's own.
"Premium everyday trainers made for modern life" gives an agent nothing to match, while waterproofing, materials, fit and price let it answer "waterproof vegan walking shoes under £120". Shopify also lists product type, vendor, collections, tags, barcodes such as GTINs, and variant option names among the fields AI platforms consider (Shopify Help Center). Keep structured values plain, such as Blue rather than Atlantic Twilight, avoid unexplained codes in option names, and keep legal disclosures within the first 6,000 characters of a description. Our guide to product page design shows the same detail working for people.
Verified reviews turn your claims into evidence, and complete policies let agents answer "can I return it?" correctly. Keep stock and delivery promises accurate too, because the agent filters before the shopper sees alternatives. If Google matters to you, Google's own figures say merchants that adopt its feed best practices see on average 5% more conversions the next month, and that lululemon's conversational attributes appeared in 50% of relevant AI Mode recommendations in testing (Google).
Most stores do not need a rebuild. The highest value work is information quality and commerce hygiene, in this order:
OAI-SearchBot (search) and GPTBot (training) as separate settings (OpenAI). Every store already serves /agents.md and /llms.txt, customisable since 28 May 2026 (Shopify), and Google says it ignores llms.txt (Google).Start in Shopify, not GA4. The Agentic section reports sales, orders, online store sessions and conversion for each AI channel, combining referral and direct checkout sales (Shopify Help Center), and each AI order carries channel attribution in your orders list.
ChatGPT shoppers pay on your own store, so GA4 sees them, but direct checkout sales on Copilot, Google and Meta fire no client side pixels, so compare figures before judging a channel. Our conversion rate guide explains how Shopify counts sessions. For direct checkout orders, the AI channel receives the customer's name, email, phone number and address, but not your order history (Shopify Help Center), so check that your privacy policy covers orders from third party channels.
The Competition and Markets Authority published guidance on complying with consumer law when using AI agents on 9 March 2026 (CMA). The same rules apply whether customers deal with a person or an AI agent, a business is responsible for an agent's actions as it is for an employee's, even when a third party supplies the agent, and breaches can bring fines of up to 10% of worldwide turnover plus compensation for consumers.
The CMA also says to tell customers when they are dealing with AI if that could affect their decisions, and to train, monitor and quickly correct agents, including respecting refund rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. For a Shopify store, that means checking any chat assistant you deploy and treating product data and policies as compliance material, because an order from an AI channel is still your sale. This is general information, not legal advice.
For most UK Shopify stores, agentic commerce is a discovery channel today and a checkout channel later. The work that pays off now, meaning complete product data, honest policies, verified reviews and accurate stock, also helps Google Shopping, organic search and conversion on your own site.
Be careful with direct checkout on stores built around retention. Across our Klaviyo clients, the welcome series and abandoned cart and checkout flows are normally the best performing flows by total revenue and conversion rate, and across 198 client stores email is a median 30% of revenue. As a Klaviyo partner and a Recharge partner, we would usually keep subscription stores on their own checkout until these channels support subscriptions.

What is agentic commerce on Shopify?
It is shopping in which an AI agent helps a customer find, compare and sometimes buy products inside a conversation. Shopify shares eligible product data with ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta through Shopify Catalog, and you manage it under Sales channels, then Agentic.
Can UK Shopify stores sell through ChatGPT?
Yes, if the store sells to customers in the United States; it does not need to be based there. Products must be eligible for Shopify Catalog and your store policies must be complete, and shoppers pay on your own online store checkout.
Does Shopify charge extra for selling through AI channels?
No. Shopify says there are no fees for ChatGPT or for the direct checkouts on Copilot, Google and Meta beyond standard payment processing. Brands not on Shopify can use the Agentic plan, which in the UK has no monthly fee and card rates from 2% plus 25p.
Can customers buy subscriptions through AI checkout?
Not through direct checkout. Shopify lists subscriptions, bundles, customisable products and B2B only products as unsupported in the direct checkouts on Copilot, Google and Meta, while ChatGPT sends shoppers to your own checkout, where subscriptions still work.
How do I stop my products appearing in AI chats?
Turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me under Sales channels, then Agentic, and remove Shopify Catalog access for each channel, which can take up to 7 days. Products can still be found through web crawling, so to hide one completely, set it to Unlisted, which also hides it from Google and your store search.
Do I need an llms.txt file for my Shopify store?
No, and you do not need an app. Every Shopify store already serves an agents.md file and matching llms.txt files that you can customise with Liquid templates, Google says it ignores llms.txt, and Shopify Catalog is what feeds Shopify's AI channels.
How do I track sales from ChatGPT and other AI channels?
Use the reports under Sales channels, then Agentic, which show sales, orders, sessions and conversion for each AI channel, and check the attribution on each order. GA4 and custom pixels do not fire inside direct checkouts, so GA4 will undercount those sales.
Agentic commerce is growing quickly on Shopify's own figures, but for UK merchants the checkout features are still mostly for US shoppers, so this is the moment to prepare rather than rebuild. Get the catalogue right, decide channel by channel whether direct checkout suits your business, protect your subscription offer and email consent, and measure AI sales in Shopify, not just GA4. When direct checkout reaches UK shoppers, the stores that did this work will be ready by default. If you would like help, email us.
