Klaviyo starts cheaply. The harder question is what happens when your Shopify email list grows from 1,000 active profiles to 5,000, 10,000 or 25,000, because the core email bill is based on how many active profiles are in your account rather than how many emails you actually send.
Klaviyo's UK pricing page currently shows self service prices in US dollars, not fixed pound prices, so this guide gives each dollar price with an approximate sterling conversion at the mid market rate on 1 October 2026, $1 = £0.755484. Your card charge can differ with exchange rates, card fees and VAT. Klaviyo also replaced SMS credits with per message pricing in July 2026, so older guides are now out of date. Prices and billing rules were checked on 1 October 2026.
Klaviyo pricing in the UK is based mainly on your number of active profiles, with each tier including a larger monthly email allowance. The free plan covers 250 active profiles and 500 sends a month. Paid tiers include $30 a month at 1,000 profiles, $100 at 5,000, $150 at 10,000 and $400 at 25,000, roughly £23, £76, £113 and £302 at the 1 October 2026 exchange rate, because Klaviyo's UK page prices self service plans in dollars. VAT may be added unless you are VAT registered, and SMS is billed separately at per message dollar rates.
The number that matters is your active profiles: Klaviyo's billing guidance counts profiles that can be emailed, and suppressed profiles do not count towards the Profiles and Email plan. A suppressed profile stays in your account with its history, but cannot receive marketing email and costs nothing on the email plan, whereas deleting a profile removes its data permanently. For routine list cleaning, suppression is therefore the better tool, with one exception: Advanced Klaviyo Data Platform billing is separate and can count total profiles, including suppressed ones.
Since February 2025, paid accounts must sit on a plan that covers their active profile count. If you grow past your tier, Klaviyo can automatically move you to the next suitable plan at the start of the next billing cycle, notifying Owners and Admins as you approach the limit; an optional auto downgrade setting works the other way after a cleanup, and owners can also change plans manually. A large cleanup can take up to 72 hours to show in billing, so wait before concluding it has not worked.
Each tier also carries an email allowance of roughly ten sends per active profile a month: 10,000 emails at 1,000 profiles, 50,000 at 5,000, 100,000 at 10,000 and 250,000 at 25,000. That is an allowance, not a target, but check your billing preferences for overages before a heavy month such as Black Friday.
Klaviyo's pricing is no longer a simple choice between email and email plus SMS. For most Shopify stores, three parts matter first:
Klaviyo also sells Reviews, Customer Hub, Marketing Analytics, the Advanced Klaviyo Data Platform, Helpdesk, Customer Agent and Composer. Not every Shopify store needs them, so separate the core Profiles and Email cost from optional products when you judge your invoice. And because the price climbs with active profiles, list growth only pays when it adds people who buy: 5,000 good subscribers are welcome, while 5,000 old or accidentally imported profiles can simply push you into a dearer tier.
Klaviyo prices in tiers rather than charging the same for every contact. These common tier points come from recent reads of Klaviyo's live calculator, matching Klaviyo's own billing example of $100 a month for 5,000 profiles, with pounds converted at $1 = £0.755484 and shown before VAT or card fees:
| Active profiles | Email plan | Approx. £ a month |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 250 | Free | Free |
| 500 | $20 | £15 |
| 1,000 | $30 | £23 |
| 2,500 | $60 | £45 |
| 5,000 | $100 | £76 |
| 10,000 | $150 | £113 |
| 25,000 | $400 | £302 |
| 50,000 | $720 | £544 |
At 1,000 profiles, around £23 a month, Klaviyo is cheap, and the real question is whether your flows and campaigns are working rather than whether another platform costs £5 less. At 5,000, around £76, list hygiene starts to matter: if 1,500 of those profiles have been inactive for a long time, suppressing them may drop you a tier. At 10,000, around £113, the bill is modest for a platform running campaigns, flows, segmentation and customer data, and only becomes expensive when much of the list is inactive or the features go unused.
At 25,000, around £302, the bill is hard to ignore, and list cleaning should become routine rather than an annual emergency; at 50,000, around £544, judge it against campaign and flow revenue, repeat purchasing, retention, deliverability and staff time saved. Because prices move in bands, crossing a threshold by a few profiles can create a noticeable jump, which is why cleaning pays most when your account sits just above a tier boundary.
Yes, depending on your status. Klaviyo has collected UK VAT since 1 October 2024: if your business is VAT registered and you add your VAT number to your Klaviyo billing details, VAT is handled through the reverse charge rather than paid to Klaviyo, but if you are not VAT registered, VAT is added to your invoice. Combined with the dollar pricing, that means a small, unregistered UK store's real monthly cost can be noticeably higher than the converted list price, so budget for VAT and any card foreign exchange fee.
Older articles talk about SMS credits, but from 13 July 2026 Klaviyo moved Mobile Messaging to per message dollar pricing. New customers and free accounts switched immediately, and existing paid subscriptions moved on their next billing cycle after 13 August 2026. You now buy a monthly allowance in dollars, and each message is deducted at a rate that depends on the channel, the recipient's country, the message type and its length, with carrier fees built into the rate.
Klaviyo shows your exact current rates in your account under Settings, Billing, Account Usage, View Text Message rates, so do not rely on an old UK credit figure. Klaviyo supports UK SMS with branded sender IDs by default. Watch message length: a standard SMS holds 160 characters, but an emoji or some special characters cut that to 70, and longer texts are billed as several segments. Unused monthly spend does not roll over, so if you regularly finish the month with capacity left, move to a smaller plan.
SMS earns its cost where speed matters: launches, back in stock alerts, high intent abandoned baskets, VIP access and genuinely short deadlines. It makes less sense as a dearer copy of every email, so start with a few high value uses, measure revenue and opt outs, and expand only when the numbers support it.
Yes. The free plan costs nothing while you stay within 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month, and you can stay on it indefinitely. It is a real working plan rather than a demo: you can sync Shopify data, send campaigns, build flows, segment, create forms and see reporting, which lets a new store build its email foundations before paying.
You outgrow it when you pass 250 active profiles or need more than 500 sends in a month, and a store with 250 subscribers, one campaign and active flows can use 500 sends surprisingly quickly; beyond the limits, Klaviyo can restrict sending until you cut usage or upgrade. Free accounts also get email support only for their first 60 days, after which you rely on the Help Centre, Academy and Community.
The fastest saving is not negotiating the cost of each send, but making sure you only pay for profiles worth keeping active. For one Why Matters client, removing 5,000 unengaged profiles from a list of 45,000 cut the monthly Klaviyo bill from £650 to £600, a saving of £600 a year, with no drop in email revenue, because the people removed had stopped opening, clicking and buying long before.
To do the same safely, check your active profile count and tier, build an inactive segment using both engagement and purchase history, run a re engagement or sunset flow, suppress those who stay inactive, wait for the count to update, then confirm you qualify for a lower tier and downgrade or switch on auto downgrade. Do not suppress everyone who missed three campaigns: someone who ordered last week but has not opened recently is very different from someone who has ignored you for two years, and Klaviyo's suppression tools avoid profiles with recent verified clicks or orders for that reason.
Klaviyo looks expensive next to a simpler tool's subscription, but for a growing Shopify store the better question is what you would lose by leaving. Its value comes from connecting shopping behaviour with marketing: welcome, browse and cart abandonment, post purchase, replenishment and win back flows, customer value segments, Shopify order data, revenue attribution and email and SMS in one profile. If you use those well, £100, £300 or £500 a month can make commercial sense; if you send one generic newsletter a month, it probably does not.
Do not reason that Klaviyo costs £302 and another tool £100, so you save £202: if the cheaper platform loses more than £202 of profitable contribution, you have saved nothing. Equally, do not justify the bill on attributed revenue alone, because attribution settings move that number; see our guide to benchmarking Shopify email revenue. For straightforward campaigns, Shopify Messaging includes 10,000 emails a month on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus, then $1 per 1,000 up to 300,000, priced by sends rather than profiles. It is cheaper and less capable, so pick the simplest platform that reliably does the work your store needs.
Disclosure: Why Matters is a Klaviyo Partner and Shopify Select partner. The most common Klaviyo pricing problem we see is not that Klaviyo is too expensive, but that the account has grown without maintenance: profiles pile up, nobody asks whether the inactive part of the list should still be marketable, and eventually someone says the store needs a cheaper platform. Sometimes that is right, but first we check how many profiles are truly active, when the list was last cleaned, which flows and campaigns earn money and which features the store really uses.
Our client's £50 a month saving came with no loss of revenue, which is typical: cleaning a list usually helps deliverability as well as the bill. Equally, if a very small store uses none of the segmentation, flows or data that justify Klaviyo, we will say so. Our email marketing service starts with a Klaviyo audit of flows, segments, campaigns, forms and deliverability, and the aim is to keep the wasted part of the bill low while making the useful part earn its place.
How much does Klaviyo cost in the UK?
Klaviyo's UK pricing page shows self service prices in US dollars: $30 a month for 1,000 active profiles, $100 for 5,000, $150 for 10,000 and $400 for 25,000. At the 1 October 2026 rate, that is roughly £23, £76, £113 and £302 a month before VAT.
Is Klaviyo free?
Yes, up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month, with $5 a month each of Mobile Messaging and Composer usage. You can stay on it indefinitely within those limits, though email support only lasts for the first 60 days.
Why is Klaviyo so expensive?
Klaviyo charges by active profiles, so the bill grows with your contactable list whether or not everyone is emailed. It becomes expensive when much of that list is inactive, or when the flows, segmentation and data that justify it are barely used.
How does Klaviyo count profiles?
Its Profiles and Email plan counts active profiles, meaning profiles that can be emailed. Suppressed, unsubscribed and deleted profiles do not count, which is why suppressing long term inactive profiles can lower the bill.
How much does Klaviyo SMS cost?
Since July 2026, Klaviyo has priced Mobile Messaging per message in dollars, by channel and country, instead of credits. You buy a monthly allowance, unused spend does not roll over, and your exact UK rate is shown in your account's billing settings.
Can I lower my Klaviyo bill?
Yes. Suppress genuinely inactive profiles after a sunset flow, then check you qualify for a lower tier. Removing 5,000 unengaged profiles from a 45,000 list cut one Why Matters client's bill from £650 to £600 a month with no drop in email revenue.
What is a cheaper alternative to Klaviyo?
For simple Shopify campaigns, Shopify Messaging includes 10,000 emails a month on eligible plans, then $1 per 1,000. It is cheaper but less capable, so compare the flows, segmentation and integrations you would lose, not just the subscription.
For a UK Shopify store, the main Klaviyo price points before VAT are roughly £23 a month at 1,000 active profiles, £76 at 5,000, £113 at 10,000, £302 at 25,000 and £544 at 50,000, converted from dollars at the 1 October 2026 rate. Your real payment can differ with exchange rates, card charges, VAT and extra Klaviyo products.
The practical lesson is simpler: do not wait until the bill feels expensive before looking at the list. Check how many profiles are genuinely active, whether your sunset flow works, whether you are on the right tier, how much unused SMS you buy and what your campaigns and flows earn, because a clean 40,000 list can earn as much as a 45,000 one for less.
