Sell on eBay when you want shoppers who are already searching its marketplace, especially for clearance, used, refurbished or collectable stock. Build on Shopify when you want control of your brand, customer data, email marketing, repeat purchases, subscriptions and SEO. For most established UK brands the answer is both: keep Shopify as the hub for your catalogue, stock and customers, connect eBay through Shopify Marketplace Connect, and give eBay a clear job where it adds profitable extra sales.
eBay gives you space inside someone else's marketplace; Shopify gives you your own store. On eBay the shopper searches, compares and pays inside eBay's interface, and eBay's fee terms make clear that sellers do not buy exclusive page space, because eBay can show third party ads and other sellers' listings on any page (eBay). On Shopify, you control the domain, homepage, product pages, offers, checkout branding, customer accounts, email capture, loyalty and subscriptions.
The marketplace is eBay's great strength. Shoppers looking for a refurbished iPhone 14 Pro, a vintage Omega watch or a replacement headlight for a particular car often know exactly what they want and go straight to eBay. A Shopify store has no built in audience, so you bring traffic through Google, paid ads, social, email, PR, content and AI shopping channels, but you control far more of what happens once customers arrive.
| Area | eBay | Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic | Existing marketplace buyers | You generate most of it |
| Monthly fee | Optional Shop from £27 | Basic from £19 billed yearly |
| Fees on each sale | Final value fee by category, plus 30p or 40p and 0.35% | Card rate from 2% plus 25p on Basic |
| Brand control | eBay Shop branding inside eBay | Your whole site and checkout branding |
| Customer contact | Controlled by eBay's rules | Your own email marketing, with consent |
| Best for | Clearance, used, refurbished and collectables | Brand building, retention and subscriptions |
| Best role | Extra marketplace channel | The hub of your business |
Many comparisons use US eBay fees or set eBay's selling fees against Shopify's monthly subscription. A UK merchant needs the fees on each order, worked out for the categories it actually sells in.
When an item sells, eBay charges a final value fee: a percentage set by category and calculated on the total sale, including postage and taxes, plus a per order fee (eBay). Most Clothes, Shoes & Accessories items carry 11.9%, other examples include 9.9% for books and 14.9% for jewellery, and several categories use tiered rates. Since 12 February 2026 the per order fee has been 30p on orders of £10 or less and 40p above (eBay Seller Centre). eBay also charges a 0.35% regulatory operating fee on the total sale, and an international fee when the buyer is overseas: 1.05% for the Eurozone and Northern Europe, 1.8% for the US and Canada and 2% elsewhere. All of these are shown excluding VAT, and optional upgrades such as subtitles and Gallery Plus can cost extra.
On a £40 clothing order, eBay's final value fee is £4.76 (11.9% of £40), the per order fee is 40p and the regulatory operating fee is 14p (0.35% of £40), so the fees total £5.30 before VAT. On Shopify Basic, which costs £19 a month billed yearly or £25 monthly, the same £40 card payment costs £1.05, because 2% of £40 is 80p and the fixed charge adds 25p (Shopify).
That does not make Shopify the cheaper channel for every sale. eBay found the buyer for you, while a Shopify merchant may have paid for that customer through Google Ads, Meta, SEO, influencers or affiliates. The fair comparison is the total cost of winning, selling and fulfilling the order, including Promoted Listings, postage and any international fees.
You do not need a Shop to sell as a business, because eBay's fee table includes a No Shop option. Basic, Featured and Anchor Shops cost £27, £77 and £437 a month and include 250, 1,500 or unlimited free fixed price listings, cheaper extra listings, a customisable shopfront with its own URL and marketing tools (eBay). Without a Shop, each fixed price listing costs 30p, so compare what the allowance and tools would save against the subscription for your own listing volume before you upgrade.
On your Shopify store you can build a direct relationship with customers who give marketing consent, through welcome flows, post purchase emails, replenishment reminders, loyalty, personalisation and win back campaigns. Shopify's own email tools only send marketing to customers who have subscribed (Shopify Help Center), and that list becomes one of the most valuable assets in the business.
eBay controls the relationship with its buyers. If you share contact details, or ask a buyer for theirs, in order to trade outside eBay, eBay can charge a final value fee for the introduction (eBay), and its User Agreement allows limits, restrictions and suspension for attempts to buy or sell off the platform (eBay User Agreement). So eBay is not a cheap way to build a customer database. Your email list gets built on Shopify, which matters most in repeat purchase categories such as beauty, supplements, coffee, food and pet products; our guides to Shopify repeat customers and Shopify email marketing show how to use it.
eBay suits certain stock better than your own store. Clearance and end of line stock, such as last season's colours, discontinued packaging and broken size runs, can sell on eBay without cluttering a premium Shopify store. Used, refurbished, ex display and open box products fit a marketplace where shoppers already compare condition, and collectables, discontinued items and rare parts suit buyers who search for something very specific.
eBay also runs auction style listings, where buyers bid and the highest bidder wins, which helps when an item's value is uncertain or supply is very limited. It can reach overseas buyers too, although international fees, delivery, returns, customs and taxes all cut into margin. If international sales become strategic rather than occasional, Shopify Markets gives you far more control over prices, duties and delivery.
The old claim that eBay offers no branding is out of date. An eBay Shop gives you a branded shopfront with your name, logo, billboard and custom categories, and Promoted Shops can advertise it using your Shop name, logo, categories or selected products. Promoted Listings raise the visibility of individual items: the general strategy charges when a promoted item sells after an ad click, while the priority strategy charges per click and adds targeting controls.
It is still an eBay experience. eBay controls navigation, search, page structure, checkout, policies and buyer communication, and every advertising pound is another cost to take off your margin. In short, eBay gives you branding tools within its ecosystem, while Shopify lets you design the whole experience around your brand.
eBay judges sellers against its performance standards, including transaction defect rate and cases closed without seller resolution, and weak performance costs money (eBay). A Below Standard business seller pays 6 extra percentage points on final value fees, rising to 7 after four consecutive months, so a 9.9% category becomes 15.9%. A very high rate of "item not as described" requests adds 4 points, rising to 5, and each dispute you are found responsible for costs £14 (eBay).
Below Standard sellers can also face lower search visibility, selling limits, payment holds and restricted access to Promoted Listings, and a Featured or Anchor Shop can be downgraded to Basic after more than 60 days. Accurate photos, honest condition notes, clear measurements, correct compatibility and reliable dispatch are therefore profit protection, especially for used, refurbished and collectable stock. A Shopify store has its own risks, but your right to sell does not depend on a marketplace rating.
You do not need two separate catalogues. Shopify Marketplace Connect links your store to eBay and keeps products, stock, prices and orders in sync, so Shopify stays the hub. If you have five units left and sell two on Shopify, eBay updates too, instead of letting a shopper buy stock you no longer have and triggering a cancellation that can hurt your seller rating.
You can set eBay specific prices to reflect its fees, advertising and international costs, but shoppers compare channels, so any difference needs to make commercial sense. Marketplace Connect is free to install, with the first 50 synced orders each month free, then 1% per additional synced order, capped at $99 a month and billed in US dollars. Automation is not set and forget: check stock, product mapping, images, prices, variants and orders after promotions or catalogue changes.
Many businesses start on eBay and later build their own store, which usually means changing eBay's role rather than closing it. Shopify's eBay migration guide covers exporting active or unsold listings from eBay Seller Hub as a CSV file, since drafts cannot be exported that way, then importing them by CSV, with a migration app or with Shopify's Store Migration app, which is in early access for some stores on desktop and imports up to three product options (Shopify Help Center). Order history can be exported the same way and moved with a third party migration app, or you can hire a Shopify Partner to handle the whole move.
Reviews cannot be exported from eBay, so import them manually with a review app. Treat the move as a rebuild rather than a data transfer: drop old and duplicate listings, then rewrite titles, descriptions, images, variants, collections and SEO for the way customers shop your brand. Our Shopify migration checklist and guide to product page design cover the detail.
For most established brands, the practical answer is to run Shopify as the centre of the business and use eBay as an extra marketplace channel. The right balance depends on what you sell, how often customers buy again and how much control you need over the relationship.
| Business type | Approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Established DTC brand | Both, Shopify led | Shopify stays the hub while eBay adds sales |
| Clearance heavy business | Both | eBay is a useful outlet for older stock |
| Used or refurbished seller | eBay plays a major role | Buyers compare condition listing by listing |
| Collectables seller | eBay led, or both | Rare and discontinued items suit eBay search |
| Subscription business | Shopify led | You control recurring orders and retention |
| Seller dependent on eBay | Build Shopify alongside | Creates an independent route to customers |
| Small seller testing demand | eBay first | Tests demand before you invest in a store |
Shopify should lead when growth depends on repeat purchase, subscriptions, loyalty, email, content and lifetime value; a skincare, coffee or pet food brand gains far more from owning the post purchase relationship than a seller of one off vintage collectables. Give each platform a clear job, connect them through Marketplace Connect, and you have genuine multichannel ecommerce rather than the same catalogue copied everywhere.
Amazon suits products where shoppers value convenience, fast delivery and broad selection, while eBay is stronger for used, unusual and discontinued stock, for condition led buying and for auctions; our Amazon vs Shopify guide covers Amazon in detail. Etsy is narrower, built for handmade goods, original designs, personalised items, vintage and craft supplies. A mature business might run Shopify as the core store, Amazon for mass market reach, eBay for clearance and specialist stock and Etsy for creative products, but each extra marketplace needs a clear commercial purpose, or it simply adds stock problems, price conflicts and fees.
We do not frame eBay vs Shopify as a contest. 20% of our clients use both eBay and Shopify, and they prefer to grow sales through their Shopify stores because advertising on eBay keeps getting more expensive. That is why we give eBay a defined role, such as clearing discontinued products, rather than letting it become the place everything goes because it always has.
Judge each channel on contribution after fees and acquisition costs, plus long term customer value. If eBay turns over £100,000 and Shopify £80,000, eBay only looks stronger until you ask which channel made more profit, needed more advertising and produced repeat buyers and email subscribers.

Is it better to sell on eBay or Shopify?
It depends on the job you need done. eBay gives you shoppers already searching its marketplace, which suits used, refurbished, clearance and collectable stock, while Shopify gives you control of your brand, customer relationships, email and repeat purchases. For many established brands, the best answer is Shopify as the hub with eBay as an extra channel.
How much does eBay charge business sellers in the UK?
eBay charges a final value fee that depends on the category, such as 11.9% for most clothing, plus a per order fee of 30p on orders up to £10 or 40p above, and a 0.35% regulatory operating fee. International fees, advertising and optional upgrades can add more, and eBay shows these fees excluding VAT.
Is Shopify cheaper than eBay?
Per sale it often is: on a £40 clothing order, eBay's fees come to £5.30 before VAT, while the Shopify Basic card fee is £1.05. But eBay brings the buyer to you, while Shopify merchants usually pay for their own traffic, so compare the total cost of winning and fulfilling each order.
Can I sell on eBay and Shopify at the same time?
Yes. Shopify Marketplace Connect links your store to eBay and syncs products, stock, prices and orders. The first 50 synced orders each month are free, then it charges 1% per additional synced order, capped at $99 a month.
Can I contact eBay buyers outside eBay?
Not to trade outside eBay. If you share or ask for contact details to buy or sell off the platform, eBay can charge a final value fee for the introduction and limit, restrict or suspend your account. Customers who buy on your Shopify store and give marketing consent can join your email list.
Do I need an eBay Shop to sell as a business?
No. eBay's business fees include a No Shop option, and its Basic, Featured and Anchor Shops cost £27, £77 and £437 a month. A Shop pays off when its free listing allowance, cheaper extra listings and tools save more than the subscription.
How do I move my eBay listings to Shopify?
Export your active or unsold listings from eBay Seller Hub as a CSV file, then import them into Shopify with a CSV import, a migration app, or Shopify's Store Migration app where your store has access to it. Reviews cannot be moved directly, so import them with a review app, and rewrite titles, descriptions and images for your own store.
eBay is an extremely useful channel for specific products, used and refurbished goods, clearance, collectables and hard to find stock, but it does not give you the control over the wider customer relationship that your own Shopify store does. So build the business on Shopify, and use eBay where it gives you something your store cannot, whether that is clearing excess stock, reaching specialist buyers or finding overseas customers. Connect the channels where it reduces the workload, then measure eBay on profit, stock efficiency and incremental sales rather than revenue alone. If you would like help setting that up, email us.
